  • WAS Starting Pitcher #27
Jake Irvin allowed one run in six innings and got the win in the Nationals’ 8-1 victory over the Rays on Saturday.
Irvin gave up one hit, walked three and struck out six. He allowed a solo home run to Brandon Lowe in the first inning, but was otherwise excellent. Irvin won four of his five starts in June and lowered his ERA to 3.03 on the year. The 27-year-old right-hander is set to face the Mets at home next week.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #75
Robert Suarez fired a scoreless ninth inning on Thursday against the Rangers to record his 22nd save of the season.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #34
Michael King struck out five and allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings on Thursday in a win over the Rangers.
King generated 13 swinging strikes, although just a pair of them came on his four-seam fastball, as he finished with a robust 34 percent CSW. A sixth-inning single from Wyatt Langford was responsible for the lone tally against him in a low-scoring pitcher’s duel at Globe Life Field. The 29-year-old former reliever will bring a strong 3.51 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 120/41 K/BB ratio across 105 innings (19 appearances, 18 starts) into a home outing on Wednesday against the Mariners in his final outing prior to the Midsummer Classic.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #31
Max Scherzer surrendered three runs over 6 1/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Padres.
Scherzer traded zeroes with his Padres counterpart Michael King early on in a throwback pitcher’s duel on the Fourth of July at Globe Life Field, but wound up fading late as runs he gave up in the sixth and seventh innings were enough to saddle him with a tough-luck loss. He struck out three and only issued one walk. The 39-year-old veteran workhorse has recorded a strong 2.70 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 11/3 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings (three starts) since making his season debut a couple weeks ago. He’ll face off against the Angels on Tuesday in his final outing prior to the All-Star break.
  • ARI Relief Pitcher #55
Diamondbacks recalled LHP Joe Jacques from Triple-A Reno.
Jacques rejoins Arizona’s bullpen for Thursday’s showdown against the Dodgers. The 29-year-old lefty has yet to make an appearance this season for the Diamondbacks.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #64
Diamondbacks optioned RHP Cristian Mena to Triple-A Reno.
Mena heads back to the minors after allowing four runs over three innings on Wednesday in his major-league debut against the Dodgers. The 21-year-old righty figures to get another look at some point later this summer.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #78
Bryan Hoeing (hamstring) will start on Friday against the White Sox.
Hoeing will be officially activated from the injured list to take the ball for Friday’s series opener against the White Sox. The 27-year-old righty has been out since early May recovering from a left hamstring strain.
  • CHC Left Fielder #8
Ian Happ went 4-for-4 and hit a pair of three-run homers as the Cubs crushed the Phillies 10-2 on Thursday.
One of Happ’s remaining hits was a double, giving him 11 total bases in four plate appearances. Unfortunately, he was on deck when the bottom of the eighth ended, denying him a chance to add on. Happ has seven homers in his last 18 games after totaling just six in his first 64. He’s added about 100 points of OPS in three weeks and is currently at .238/.351/.448 for the year.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #50
Jameson Taillon limited the Phillies to two runs over seven innings in inning Thursday and improving to 5-4 on the year.
Taillon struck out seven and walked none. He’s now 3-0 this year when he goes without a walk. He’s also 3-0 when he strikes out at least six. Really, he ought to try doing both things more often. Next up for him will be a tough one in Baltimore against the Orioles.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #61
Cristopher Sánchez surrendered seven runs in four-plus innings versus the Cubs on Thursday.
After three scoreless innings, Sánchez gave up a walk, a 109-mph single and a 112-mph homer to Iam Happ to start the fourth. That wasn’t the end of the damage, though. The Cubs rallied for two more runs in that frame after another walk, and then had two more soft hits to begin the fifth, resulting in his Sánchez’s removal. Both runners later came around to score off Seranthony Domínguez. Sánchez was working on a 19-inning scoreless streak until the fourth today. He gave up as many earned runs today as in his previous seven starts combined, and his ERA jumped from 2.41 to 2.96.
  • CHC Left Fielder #27
Seiya Suzuki went 2-for3 with two walks, a steal and three runs scored Thursday versus the Phillies.
It’s nice seeing Suzuki with eight steals in 10 attempts this season after he was just 6-for-13 last year. He’s not excelling in any fantasy category, but neither has he been a liability in any while batting .263 with 11 homers, 35 runs scored and 34 RBI in 62 games.
