  • CLE Starting Pitcher #48
According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Guardians have signed LHP Matthew Boyd to a major league deal, pending a physical.
The Boyd Boys are back in business. The left-hander held a showcase with 17 teams on June 8th when he was a little over 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery. He was reportedly sitting 92-93 with his fastball, which was enough to win over the Guardians. The 33-year-old was 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA in 15 starts for the Tigers last season before undergoing surgery, and will almost certainly require a handful of rehab starts before he threatens to take the job of anybody in the Guardians’ rotation.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Joe Ryan surrendered five runs in 5 1/3 innings while being credited with a loss Friday against the Giants.
Ryan battled some command issues with three walks while allowing five hits and throwing 62-of-98 pitches for strikes. He did strike out six, but those punchouts only go so far when you give up a five-spot to a mediocre San Francisco lineup. It’s a downer ending to the first half for Ryan, who now has a 3.53 ERA, 6-6 record and 124/19 K/BB over 19 starts.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #45
Kyle Harrison held the Twins to just one run while throwing 5 1/3 innings to get a win Friday.
Harrison’s run came when he was out of the game on a fielder’s choice that scored Carlos Correa off the bat of Willi Castro. The 22-year-old southpaw issued only one walk while striking out three in his final start before the All-Star break. Harrison has had some ups and downs in his first full year of MLB action, but a 4.08 ERA and 73/27 K/BB over 86 innings illustrate there’s reason for optimism in both the short and long-term.
  • SEA Catcher #29
Cal Raleigh homered in an extra-inning loss for the Mariners to the Angels on Friday.
Raleigh also singled and drew an intentional walk. The homer was a two-run blast to give Seattle a 4-2 lead, and it also gave the switch-hitting backstop his 20th homer; the first time a Mariner catcher has hit that many home runs before the All-Star break. Raleigh was not a consistent threat in May or June, but he’s been spectacular in July and should be a strong fantasy option for the remainder of 2024.
  • SEA Center Fielder #44
Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run homer while going 3-for-5 in an extra-inning loss to the Angels on Friday.
The man they call J-Rod smashed an opposite-field homer with Mitch Garver on off Tyler Anderson to give Seattle a 2-0 lead and Rodríguez his 10th homer of the campaign. He also singled twice. Fantasy managers are far too familiar with how streaky the 23-year-old has been over his career, but one of those hot runs appears to be happening just before the break.
  • LAA Left Fielder #5
Willie Calhoun homered twice including a two-run homer in the 10th inning to give the Angels a 6-5 win over the Mariners on Friday.
Calhoun tied the game at 2-2 in the first inning with a long blast off Bryan Woo. He came up in the 10th with the Angels trailing 5-4, and he obliterated an Austin Voth offering to give Los Angeles the win and Calhoun his fourth homer of the year.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #31
Tyler Anderson gave up four runs in six innings Friday in a no-decision versus the Mariners
Anderson gave up all four runs on homers. The first was a two-run bomb from Julio Rodriguez in the first inning, the second to the red-hot Cal Raleigh in the third. The southpaw didn’t issue a walk and struck out four against his former team, but did see his ERA jump a smidgen to 2.97. Anderson will next get a chance to pitch in the All-Star game Tuesday.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #22
Bryan Woo gave up nine hits and four runs in a no-decision against the Angels on Friday while working 3 1/3 innings.
Woo gave up a two-run homer to Willie Calhoun in the first and another two runs in the fourth, and the 24-year-old scuffled between those frames as well. It was his first start back since June 24 when he went on the injured list with a hamstring strain, and it was not an effective one. He allowed nine hits and walked two with just one strikeout in very easily his worst start of the 2024 season. Woo offers some fantasy appeal, but there’s some risk in a second-year hurler who doesn’t offer elite swing-and-miss stuff.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #49
White Sox released RHP Joe Barlow.
The 28-year-old hurler had been pitching at Triple-A Charlotte where he had posted a 9.20 ERA, 2.05 WHIP and an 18/9 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings of work. He’ll attempt to latch on elsewhere on a minor league pact.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #57
Chad Green walked three while allowing a run to pick up a loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Green has been effective for the Blue Jays, but he walked three hitters in his 2/3 of an inning — one of those intentional — and with the bases loaded, Geraldo Perdomo was able to get enough of one for a sac fly to score Corbin Carroll in the bottom of the ninth. Even with the allowed run, Green still has an ERA of 1.85, and he’s likely going to change teams by the end of the month — assuming Toronto no longer views itself as a contender, of course.
  • ARI Center Fielder #7
Corbin Carroll went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases in a win over the Blue Jays on Friday.
Carroll also scored a run, and it was the game-winner on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Geraldo Perdomo in the bottom of the ninth. The 23-year-old has now stolen 18 bases with the pair of thefts. Those are nice. His .210/.297/.316 slash requires a different word.
