  • ATL Catcher #45
Braves optioned C Chadwick Tromp to Triple-A Gwinnett.
With Travis d’Arnaud and Sean Murphy both healthy, there’s simply no room for Tromp on the big league roster at the moment. Tromp has hit .250/.259/.365 with zero homers and six RBI in 54 plate appearances with the Braves this season. He’ll continue to bide his time at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once more.
  • NYY Shortstop #11
Anthony Volpe is starting at shortstop but batting sixth on Thursday against the Reds.
It’s the first time since April 10th that Volpe will be in the lineup and not be leading off. However, it appears to be a move that was a long time coming. Since Volpe moved into the leadoff spot, he has had the worst on-base percentage among every Yankees player with at least 250 plate appearances. He also ranks as the third-worst leadoff hitter in baseball with his 87 wRC+. Considering the Yankees’ lead-off hitter bats in front of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, the team needs somebody who can consistently get on base and be driven in by those two studs. Ben Rice will get that shot on Thursday.
  • TOR Catcher #15
Blue Jays optioned C Brian Serven to Triple-A Buffalo.
Serven was called up on Monday with Danny Jansen on the paternity list. He made one start during his time up and will now return to Triple-A.
  • TOR Catcher #9
Blue Jays returned Danny Jansen from the paternity list.
Jansen and his wife welcomed a baby girl this week, so congrats to both of them. He will return to the Blue Jays active roster but is not in the lineup on Thursday.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #34
Kodai Senga (shoulder) will make his next start at Triple-A Syracuse.
Senga threw 2 2/3 perfect innings on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for High-A Brooklyn, striking out six on the day. He will now start in Triple-A on Tuesday and will throw 50 pitches, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. At this same, Senga would likely need at least two more rehab starts after this one to build up his pitch count enough to return.
  • PIT Center Fielder #77
Pirates recalled OF Joshua Palacios from Triple-A Indianapolis.
What’s interesting is that this move was reported on Tuesday, but Palacios is now being called up with Jared Jones headed to the IL, so we have no idea what the Pirates’ original intended move was. Nevertheless, Palacios will now join a crowded outfield after hitting .311/.386/.419 with one homer and one steal in 21 games this season for Triple-A Indianapolis. It’s unclear how playing time will shakeout here.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #37
Pirates placed RHP Jared Jones on the 15-day injured list with a strained lat.
Jones was removed from Wednesday night’s game after 78 pitches with a strained lat. The team didn’t express much concern over the injury, but Jones found himself on the injured list anyway on Thursday morning. With the Pirates already planning to limit Jones’ innings in his rookie season, this would seem to be an easy way to pause Jones’ innings count for a little bit and bring him back after the All-Star break without having the massage his innings as much.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #32
Brewers acquired RHP Aaron Civale from the Rays for SS Gregory Barrios.
It doesn’t come as a total shock to see another analytically-driven front office rolling the dice on Civale after he spent the first couple seasons of his career in Cleveland and Tampa Bay’s pitching development engines. The 29-year-old righty was phenomenal last year for the Rays following a midseason trade from the Guardians, but his strikeout rate has regressed back to previous level this year and he’s struggled to a pedestrian 5.07 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 84/27 K/BB ratio across 87 innings (17 starts). Even if the strikeouts don’t return, Civale represents an upgrade for Milwaukee’s injury-ravaged starting rotation moving forward, even if it’s a tough landing spot for fantasy purposes from a park factors standpoint.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #34
Kodai Senga (shoulder) recorded six strikeouts over 2 2/3 perfect innings on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for High-A Brooklyn.
Things went swimmingly for Senga in his long-awaited return to game action as he threw 35 pitches (25 strikes) and fanned six of the nine batters he faced. The 31-year-old righty, who has been on the shelf since spring training due to a shoulder issue, will need several additional rehab outings before he’s ready to make his season debut. He’ll progress to facing some higher level minor-league hitters in the near future.
  • LAD Relief Pitcher #45
Dodgers sent RHP J.P. Feyereisen outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Feyereisen went unclaimed on waivers after being removed from Los Angeles’s 40-man roster to free up a spot for lefty reliever Matt Gage. The 31-year-old righty has struggled this season in 10 relief appearances for the Dodgers after missing the last couple years due to injury.
  • ARI First Baseman #53
Christian Walker went 4-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored, and four RBI in a 12-4 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday.
After drawing a walk in the first inning, Walker knocked a base hit in the third for his second hit. He followed with a solo homer in the fourth, his second in as many days against the Dodgers. Walker added a double in the sixth and scored on a home run by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. before blasting his second homer of the game with a three-run shot in the ninth. The 33-year-old slugger is hitting .267/.339/.506 with 20 homers and 59 RBI across 369 plate appearances.
