  • CIN Relief Pitcher #43
Alexis Díaz escaped with his 11th save after giving up a run in the ninth Friday against the Reds.
Díaz got lucky when a pitch that hit both Nick Madigal’s hand and the knob of his bat was ruled a foul ball and was then fortunate again when Madrigal, as the tying run, was thrown out at home plate trying to score on Seiya Suzuki’s double. Díaz has a 5.91 ERA this season. He’s walked 15 and hit three batters in 21 1/3 innings. He’s simply not worthy of trust right now, but since he’s blown only two saves and the Reds don’t have anyone else they’re really wanting to turn to, he’ll probably remain in the closer’s role for now. Lucas Sims is likely still second in line, even if Fernando Cruz is the more interesting reliever these days.
  • LAA Center Fielder #16
Mickey Moniak (hand) is not in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Angels.
Moniak was able to appear off the bench, but still hasn’t been in the starting lineup since being diagnosed with a hand contusion Sunday. Jordyn Adams gets the start in center with Moniak not ready to go.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #77
The Astros hope to have Luis Garcia (elbow) face hitters before the season comes to an end.
Garcia won’t be able to pitch in a game, but the hope is that the 27-year-old can face live hitters before the season closes to build some confidence for him coming into 2025. Assuming there’s no setbacks, Garcia should be able to have a role in the rotation to begin next year.
  • COL Center Fielder #9
Brenton Doyle was scratched from Friday’s lineup against the Dodgers with left knee soreness.
Doyle was originally scheduled to play center and hit third against the Dodgers, but the soreness in his knee will keep him from doing that. Consider Doyle day-to-day, but keep in mind how little baseball is left/how little can be gained by risking further injury for Doyle.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #31
Tyler Glasnow (elbow) told reporters Friday that he’s confident that he won’t need to undergo a surgical procedure.
Glasnow told reporters that the follow-up imaging didn’t reveal anything more than a sprain. The right-hander was frustrated by the injury as he believed he had figured out a path to avoid the sprain he suffered, which helps explain why he didn’t speak to the media until now. Assuming no operation is needed, Glasnow should be ready for the start of the 2025 campaign.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #34
Kodai Senga (calf) will start Saturday for Triple-A Syracuse.
The expectation is that Senga will throw two innings or 35 pitches, whichever comes first. The right-hander could make his return to the Mets as a bullpen arm before the end of the season, and then be a valuable multiple-inning arm for New York if the team makes the postseason.
  • COL Center Fielder #9
Brenton Doyle was scratched from Friday’s lineup against the Dodgers.
No reason has been given as to why Doyle isn’t playing. The 26-year-old will retreat to the bench, and Sam Hilliard will start in center field.
  • NYY Left Fielder #22
Juan Soto (knee) is hitting second and playing right field against the Athletics on Friday.
Soto injured his knee making a sliding catch Thursday against the Mariners, but X-rays returned negative, and the 25-year-old superstar will be able to go to begin the three-game set against Oakland.
  • BAL First Baseman #6
Ryan Mountcastle (wrist) is hitting third and playing first base for Triple-A Norfolk on Friday during his rehab assignment.
Mountcastle is playing in his first rehab game as he works his way back from the wrist injury that has sidelined him since August. He’ll likely need a few games with the Tide, and then could/should return to Baltimore for the final contests of the regular campaign.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #50
Jameson Taillon pitched two-hit ball over six shutout innings as the Cubs bested the Nationals 3-1 on Friday.
With his velocity down a bit today, Taillon got just two missed swings in the 80-pitch outing. Still, most everything the Nationals hit against him was soft. After a rough August, Taillon has bounced back to allow a total of three runs in four starts this month. He’ll take an 11-8 record and a 3.41 ERA into his final start next week. He’s currently due to face the Phillies on Wednesday, but he could be pushed back to Friday against the Reds if the Cubs want.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #37
Porter Hodge notched his seventh save with a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Nationals.
He struck out two in a quick nine-pitch inning. Hodge did also throw 20 pitches on Thursday, so he figures to be unavailable Saturday. Jorge López might get a save chance then.
