  • STL Third Baseman #13
Matt Carpenter went 1-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs Monday in a win over the Angels.
Carpenter has his first two RBI of the season. The 38-year-old plated both runs with a single in the seventh that tied the game at 4-4. Carpenter hit leadoff in this game, and while that makes him a little more intriguing than hitting near the bottom, it’s not enough to suggest him as a fantasy player in 2024.
  • SD Shortstop #2
Xander Bogaerts (shoulder) went 1-for-3 with a walk on Thursday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A El Paso.
Bogaerts, who was at designated hitter on Thursday in his rehab assignment debut, is working his way back from a fractured left shoulder that sent him to the injured list back on May 20. The 31-year-old figures to return as San Diego’s primary option at the keystone, but could wind up bouncing around between several positions moving forward. He’s going to require additional rehab contests to get back up to speed before returning to San Diego’s lineup.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #23
Robbie Ray (elbow) allowed three runs over three innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento.
Ray struck out three and only issued one walk. He gave up only two hits, but one of them wound up leaving the yard. The 32-year-old southpaw is in the closing stages of his recovery from last year’s Tommy John surgery and figures to be ready to make his San Francisco debut right around the All-Star break.
  • COL Starting Pitcher #48
Germán Márquez (elbow) was charged with two runs (one earned) over 3 2/3 innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Double-A Hartford.
Márquez struck out two and only issued one walk. The 29-year-old righty, who is in the final stages of his lengthy rehabilitation process from last year’s Tommy John surgery, is expected to return to Colorado’s starting rotation following the All-Star break in a couple weeks.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #77
Luis Garcia (elbow) was charged with four runs over 1 1/3 innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Double-A Corpus Christi.
Garcia allowed three hits, including a pair of homers, while striking out two and only issuing one walk. He threw 31 pitches (21 strikes) in his first rehab outing. The 27-year-old righty is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and will presumably be an option for Houston’s injury-depleted starting rotation at some point in early August.
  • LAD Right Fielder #23
Jason Heyward will get an MRI on Friday after hurting his left knee during Thursday’s game.
Heyward was hurt on the landing after trying and failing to rob Joc Pederson of a homer. If it’s a significant injury, the Dodgers could recall James Outman to play against right-handers.
  • ARI First Baseman #53
Christian Walker hit two more homers and walked twice Thursday as the Diamondbacks dominated the Dodgers 9-3.
Walker also homered twice Thursday. He has nine homers in nine games against the Dodgers this season, compared to 12 in 78 games against everyone else. With his OPS having climbed from .780 on Friday to .871 now, he’d seem to have a pretty good shot of finally landing his first All-Star berth.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #23
Zac Gallen allowed three runs over four innings Thursday in his start versus the Dodgers.
The results weren’t great, but Gallen’s velocity tonight was even better in his first start back from the IL; he averaged 95.9 mph on his fastball, up from 95.2 mph last time out and 92.9 mph in the 11 starts before he went on the IL. Because of the diminished velocity, we were a bit down on him before his hamstring injury. He seems like a better bet now, though.
  • ARI Relief Pitcher #63
Justin Martinez fanned five in three scoreless innings of relief for a win against the Dodgers on Thursday.
Most relief wins are largely a product of being in the right place at the right time, but Martinez certainly earned this one. With his walk rate somewhat under control (he’s issued 17 free passes in 35 innings), he’s been one of the NL’s best relievers since making his 2024 debut on Apr. 17, amassing a 1.54 ERA in 35 innings.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #96
Landon Knack yielded four runs in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
Knack struck out six and walked just one tonight, but of the 11 balls put in play against him, seven were hit hard and three ended up as homers. It makes him a scarier play in Philly next time out, especially with Kyle Schwarber likely to be back and Bryce Harper also maybe coming off the IL by then.
  • ARI Third Baseman #28
Even as his teammates were combining to put up nine runs, Eugenio Suárez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Thursday against the Dodgers.
The Diamondbacks said after Geraldo Perdomo returned last month that they’d start giving Blaze Alexander time over Suárez at third base, but not only did they not to do that, they’ve since sent down Alexander, even though Suárez has done nothing to inspire any confidence. He’s at .200/.287/.319 through 327 plate appearances. He has 96 strikeouts and 91 total bases. He’s gone hitless in exactly half of his 82 starts.
