Alex Wood lasted just two innings in Sunday’s loss to the Mariners, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits.
Wood also issued a base on balls and recorded a strikeout in the abbreviated outing. The M’s scratched out a run against him in the first inning on an RBI single by Mitch Garver. They tacked on four more runs in the second — the final two on a blast from Julio Rodriguez. Wood generated just four swings and misses on 60 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll carry a troublesome 5.26 ERA and 1.78 WHIP into Friday’s matchup against the Royals in Kansas City.

Angels sent LHP José Quijada outright to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Quijada went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last week. The 29-year-old lefty has made 106 relief appearances for the Angels dating back to 2020. He’s merely extra organizational relief depth at this stage of his career.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #27
Edward Cabrera will make a rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday.
Cabrera, who is on the shelf with a blister, will be eligible to come off the injured list on April 11. He’ll probably make two rehab starts before the Marlins decide whether he’s ready to return.
  • TEX Third Baseman #8
Josh Smith is starting at third base on Monday after missing a game due to left quad contusion.
Smith is batting seventh tonight. He’ll play pretty regularly while Josh Jung is on the injured list.
  • ATL Left Fielder #17
Braves acquired OF Stuart Fairchild from the Reds for cash considerations.
Fairchild is out of options, so he’ll join the major league club. That seems like bad news for Bryan De La Cruz, who does have options and who fills a similar role as a platoon outfielder against left-handers. It’s possible the Braves could demote Eli White instead, but that seems unlikely. Fairchild, 29, hit just .215/.286/.368 for the Reds last season, but he was still a surprise exclusion from this year’s roster. He’s a lifetime .248/.346/.409 hitter against lefties, and he’s a big defensive upgrade from De La Cruz.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #77
Braves transferred RHP Joe Jiménez from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list.
Jiménez is expected to be sidelined into the second half of the season after knee surgery.
  • NYY First Baseman #22
Yankees re-signed 1B Dominic Smith to a minor league contract.
Smith opted out of his deal with the Yankees last week in the hopes of getting a major league spot elsewhere, but that never materialized. He hit .297/.289/.568 this spring to make a case for a spot on the Yankees bench, but he’ll head to Triple-A for now.
  • NYY Center Fielder #78
Yankees prospect Spencer Jones is returning to Double-A Somerset to open the year.
The Yankees don’t have a particularly crowded outfield in Triple-A, but they’re going to return the 23-year-old Jones to the level at which he struck out 200 times last season. Jones did have a solid spring, hitting .250/.333/.594 with three homers, but even then, he fanned in 16 of his 36 plate appearances.
  • PIT Center Fielder #22
Despite homering Sunday, Andrew McCutchen is on the bench Monday for the second time in three games.
The Pirates likely are better off using Jack Suwinski over McCutchen against righties, especially since it means improving the outfield defense (Bryan Reynolds is DHing for the second time in three days). Still, it’s surprising they’re doing it often already. McCutchen didn’t look great this spring, but he has four hard-hit balls and a couple of walks in 13 plate appearances thus far.
  • NYM Left Fielder #3
Jesse Winker is out of the Mets lineup against a right-hander on Monday.
Starling Marte is getting the nod at DH today. Winker is off to a 1-for-7 start this season. He came up big in the postseason for the Mets, but in 47 regular-season games for the club, he’s hit just .240/.316/.355 with 14 RBI.
  • ATL Catcher #12
Sean Murphy will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
Murphy played in just three games this spring before going down with a broken rib, so the Braves will want him to get some at-bats before activating him. Drake Baldwin figures to be sent down to play regularly once Murphy is activated.
