Mets signed veteran INF Mike Brosseau to minor league contract.
Brosseau was released by the Royals last week and now finds himself with the Mets organization where he’ll be a utility depth piece for New York. The 30-year-old journeyman has played SS, 2B, 3B, 1B, RF, LF and has even pitched in the majors.

AJ Smith-Shawver left Thursday’s start against the Phillies after being hit by a comebacker. He went 2 2/3 innings while allowing two runs before exiting.
Smith-Shawver initially stayed in the game, but he faced just one batter before being pulled. The 22-year-old was hit in the foot area by a 96 mph liner from Bryson Stott. Smith-Shawver will assuredly undergo testing/imaging to determine the next steps.
Vest emerging as Tigers closer going forward
Eric Samulski dives into the closer-by-committee situation with the Detroit Tigers, sharing why Will Vest is likely the "primary option" after picking up his seventh save of the season.
  • ATL Left Fielder #17
Stuart Fairchild left the first game of a doubleheader against the Phillies with an apparent injury.
Dave O’Brien of The Athletic reports that it appears Fairchild dislocated his pinkie while stealing a base. Ronald Acuña Jr. is now in the game in right field. There should be an update on the severity of Fairchild’s injury before the start of the second game.
  • ARI 2nd Baseman #6
Diamondbacks re-signed Ildemaro Vargas to a one-year contract.
Vargas opted out of his contract May 27 with the Diamondbacks, but will remain with the organization. The 33-year-old offers versatility with his glove, but almost nothing with his bat.
  • ARI Shortstop #10
Diamondbacks optioned INF Jordan Lawlar to Triple-A Reno.
Lawlar didn’t get much of a chance to shine, but he didn’t pick up a hit in his limited action in the majors and Arizona will wisely move him back to an everyday role. The 22-year-old will be replaced by Ildemaro Vargas on the active roster. Fantasy managers can cut bait on Lawlar in redraft leagues, but there’s still enormous fantasy upside in the long-term.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #18
Shota Imanaga (hamstring) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday and went through running/fielding drills.
He will repeat a similar workout over the weekend and then could potentially begin a rehab assignment. He’s been on the IL since May 5th, so he will likely need to make a few rehab starts before being cleared. That puts him on track for a late June return, and gives Ben Brown and Cade Horton more time to battle for the final spot in the Cubs rotation.
  • TEX Left Fielder #32
Evan Carter (quad) did some sprinting on Wednesday and will begin a rehab assignment this weekend.
Carter had already resumed some baseball activities, so sprinting was the next step before clearing him for a rehab assignment. The 22-year-old has struggled since being promoted from Triple-A earlier in the season, but the Rangers will likely continue to give him opportunities once he’s played a few rehab games.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #41
Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) has resumed playing catch.
Arrighetti has been on the injured list since early in April when he fractured his thumb after being hit by a line drive. Since then, the Astros have also lost both Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco for the season. The team is likely desperate to get Arrighetti back in the rotation, but he will need to throw a few bullpens first before being cleared for a rehab assignment. An early July return feels likely.
  • MIA Shortstop #9
Xavier Edwards (back) will begin his rehab assignment today with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.
Interestingly, will play second base on Thursday, and “Miami plans for him to move there and keep Otto Lopez at shortstop when Edwards is reinstated from the IL.” Edwards has a -6 Outs Above Average this season at shortstop and was -10 last year, so this seems to be the right move.
  • BAL Right Fielder #9
Tyler O’Neill (shoulder) has resumed baseball activities and is close to beginning a rehab assignment.
O’Neill has been on the injured list since May 18th with a shoulder impingement and had previously been on the IL with a neck injury that may be connected. The 29-year-old likely won’t need too long in the minors on his rehab assignment, and with Colton Cowser (thumb) also coming back soon, Heston Kjerstad may find himself back in the minors soon.
  • ATL Right Fielder #13
Ronald Acuña Jr. is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Phillies on Thursday.
There doesn’t appear to be anything to see her other than a routine rest game. We’d expect Acuña Jr. to be in the lineup for Game 2. Stuart Fairchild will start in right field and bat seventh with Eli White playing for Alex Verdugo in left field against a left-handed starter.
