  • CIN Relief Pitcher #31
After taking over for an injured Frankie Montas, Brent Suter pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday in the Reds’ 3-0 shutout of the Angels.
It’s hardly fair that Suter had to settle for $3 million over the winter after the season he had in Colorado last year. He’s at it again for the Reds now, having worked 12 1/3 scoreless innings in his last five appearances. He has a 3.11 ERA in 275 innings since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2019.
  • MIN Center Fielder #25
Twins activated Byron Buxton (hip) from the 10-day IL.
There have been a lot of stops and starts on Buxton’s rehab assignment as he worked his way back from a hip injury, but the veteran is finally back. In 90 games this season, the 30-year-old is hitting .275 with 16 home runs, 54 runs scored, 49 RBI, and six steals. He will return to a nearly everyday role in the Twins’ lineup and is just three games away from playing the most games in a season since 2017. Austin Martin was sent to the minors in a corresponding move.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #74
Astros recalled LHP Bryan King from Triple-A Sugar Land
King has been stellar at both Triple-A and in the majors this season, posting a 2.05 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 27:9 K:BB ratio in 22 innings with the Astros. He will give the Astros another dependable lefty other than Josh Hader. Nick Hernandez was demoted in a corresponding move.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #72
Astros optioned RHP Nick Hernandez to Triple-A Sugar Land.
Hernandez has struggled in eight innings at the big league level this year, posting a 7.88 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. The 29-year-old does have a 1.90 ERA in 23 2/3 innings in Triple-A with a 34:9 K:BB ratio and figures to remain organizational bullpen depth. Bryan King was called up in a corresponding move.
  • HOU Shortstop #16
Astros recalled INF Grae Kessinger from Triple-A Sugar Land.
With Chas McCormick (wrist) being placed on the IL, the Astros will bring up Kessinger to fill a bench infield spot. The 27-year-old was up with the Astros for 11 weeks earlier this year but started only two games and went 0-for-15 in total. He doesn’t figure to play much this time around either.
  • HOU Left Fielder #20
Astros placed Chas McCormick on the 10-day IL with a fractured left wrist.
McCormick suffered the injury last night, so his placement on the injury list is just a formality at this point. Given the nature of the fracture, it’s likely that McCormick will be out for the remainder of the regular season. Grae Kessinger was called up in a corresponding move.
  • OAK First Baseman #15
Seth Brown is not in the starting lineup for the A’s on Thursday.
The veteran will take a seat against a left-hander starter with Daz Cameron starting in left field and batting eighth. Brown has hit .296 with seven home runs, 13 runs scored, and 25 RBI in 41 games since the All-Star break; however, the A’s will face four more lefties in their next six games, which could impact his playing time going forward.
  • DET Right Fielder #30
Kerry Carpenter is starting at designated hitter and batting second for the Tigers on Thursday.
Carpenter has been hitting fourth in recent weeks, but the Tigers will move him up to second perhaps to get him extra at-bats. The 27-year-old has been heating up of late, batting .313 with six home runs, 12 runs, and 20 RBI in 23 games since being activated off the IL in August. Extra at-bats at the top of the order will be a nice boost to his fantasy value.
  • STL Left Fielder #33
Brendan Donovan is not in the starting lineup for the Cardinals on Thursday against the Reds.
Since Thomas Saggese was called up earlier this week, he has started every single game with the Cardinals rotating out another player in the lineup each game. One game Masyn Winn sat, the next game Lars Nootbaar sat, and now Brendan Donovan will sit. It’s a bit of a frustrating situation for fantasy managers because you’ll never know who will sit in which game.
  • COL Outfielder #22
Nolan Jones is not in the starting lineup for the Rockies on Thursday.
After two games off, Jones was back in the lineup for the Rockies on Wednesday. With a left-handed pitcher on the mound on Thursday, Jones will sit again which is frustrating for fantasy managers. At this point in the season, given how frustrating a season it has been for Jones, there’s no reason for the Rockies to keep him out of the lineup. Hunter Goodman will start in right field and bat seventh with Jordan Beck sliding to left field.
  • STL Starting Pitcher #72
Tink Hence exited his start at Double-A on Wednesday night with trainers after just 29 pitches.
After a seemingly normal first inning, Hence began the second inning with a groundout but threw four of the last six pitches in the dirt. He was met on the mound by the Springfield infield, his manager, and an athletic trainer before walking off the mound with the trainer. The Cardinals have not yet revealed any more information about the nature of his injury, but Cardinals’ fans and fantasy managers are holding their breath for good news on the Cardinals’ top pitching prospect.
