That explains why Fairbanks wasn’t called upon in the tenth inning to protect a two-run lead against the Bombers. Even without their stopper, the Rays were able to get the job done on Saturday, with Garrett Cleavinger working a scoreless frame to earn his first save of the season. Fairbanks is still the most likely hurler to accrue saves in the Rays’ bullpen, but they do have several other capable arms.

With the Blue Jays out of the postseason mix, any urgency for Romano to pull off a late September return has dissipated. Chad Green will likely finish out the year as Toronto’s closer. Romano, who saved 36 games in both 2022 and ’23, finishes this year with a 6.59 ERA and eight saves in 15 appearances.

Allen very much earned another chance with the A’s by hitting .345/.431/.397 in 81 games in Triple-A, but it’s incredible that the team decided to give it to him one day after activating Jacob Wilson from the injured list. Allen went 1-for-4 in his second day back in the majors on Aug. 29, and he’s totaled one at-bat since. Max Schuemann has been slumping badly for over a month now (.137/.239/.177 in his last 34 games), so maybe Allen could start over him every once in a while.

It sounds like it’s something that’s been bothering Lowe for a little while and that he’s going to have to manage the rest of the way. If you picked him up during his surge in July and the first half of August, it’s time to drop him now. Jonathan Aranda should get some extra playing time with Lowe occasionally sitting.

Chuckie Robinson is starting in his place tonight. Consider Lee to be day-to-day.

Harrison goes on the IL after giving up 11 runs over 7 1/3 innings in his last two starts, leaving him 7-7 with a 4.56 ERA for the season. No word yet on if he’s done for the year. The Giants might consider promoting Carson Whisenhunt to take over for him in the rotation or they could just employ bullpen games until Robbie Ray is back.

Warren made one appearance for the Giants last month, throwing two scoreless innings. He’ll be available in the pen tonight, and he could be a candidate to start a bullpen game Sunday.

Gil’s velocity was down about two mph today after his brief absence due to a back strain, but it obviously didn’t cause him any problems. He still had 15 missed swings and a 31% CSW in the 89-pitch outing. The strong showing will probably quiet the calls to send him to the pen, at least for now. It’s still possible he’ll wind up there at the end of the month and in the postseason. Next up for him, though, will be a start Wednesday against the Royals.

A three-run lead would have made this an easy day for Aaron Boone to send Clay Holmes out to regain some confidence. Instead, Holmes remained in the pen, and Weaver finished things off after Jake Cousins and Tommy Kahnle set him up with scoreless innings. Weaver had some help from umpire Jordan Baker, who apparently wanted this one over with and gave him four free strikes to the three batters he retired. Weaver appears to be worth grabbing if you’re chasing saves.

All three runs scored in the top of the third, when the first four hitters in the Yankees lineup went walk, single, double, single. Wicks allowed just two other hits in the game, both of them singles, but the damage was done. He’ll make his next start against the Dodgers, so he probably won’t prove worth using in mixed leagues.
