  • CWS Starting Pitcher
White Sox designated RHP Josimar Cousin for assignment.
Cousin finds himself caught up in a roster crunch and loses his spot on Chicago’s 40-man. The 26-year-old righty has yet to pitch in the big leagues and figures to pass through waivers unclaimed.
  • MIN Third Baseman #23
Royce Lewis delivered a two-run homer and a two-run single to lead the Twins past the White Sox 10-2 on Friday.
This makes 12 homers and 25 RBI in 31 games for Lewis this season. He has 29 homers and 82 RBI in 101 games for his career, which would be pretty ridiculous if those 101 games hadn’t stretched over three seasons. Still, while he can’t be counted on to remain healthy, Lewis looks like a top-20 overall player while he is close to 100 percent.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Joe Ryan held the White Sox to two runs and three hits over 6 1/3 innings in victory Friday.
Ryan struck out seven and walked three in improving to 7-7 with a 3.59 ERA. He’s given the Twins 13 quality starts in 22 tries, and he’s also had four additional outings in which he’s pitched at least 5 1/3 innings and allowed no more than three earned runs.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #65
Davis Martin yielded four runs in 3 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Twins.
Martin was making his first start and second appearance since returning from Tommy John surgery. The stuff probably isn’t there for him to function as a quality starter in the majors, but he might find a niche in middle relief.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #36
Steven Wilson surrendered five runs while getting just two outs against the Twins on Friday.
Wilson is a threat for saves in the White Sox pen following the Michael Kopech deal, but this obviously won’t help matters. John Brebbia is probably the favorite for saves at this point, but even so, he seems like a weak choice in shallow leagues.
  • CWS Third Baseman #20
Miguel Vargas hit his first homer for the White Sox against the Twins on Friday.
The two-run shot on the third provided the only runs of the game for the White Sox. It’s his only hit to date in three games for his new team. Still, he’ll probably offer some value in deeper mixed leagues while serving as an everyday player in Chicago.
  • HOU Catcher #21
Yainer Diaz went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk as the Astros edged the Rays 3-2 on Friday.
Diaz was DHing with Victor Caratini catching tonight. It’s an arrangement we’ll likely see more of after the Astros failed to add a bat before the deadline. It’s definitely a good thing for Diaz’s value; the Astros aren’t down on him as a catcher, but with Caratini performing like a regular, there’s room for both right now. The Astros might eventually recall César Salazar to provide more flexibility in using both Diaz and Caratini at the same time.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #16
Yusei Kikuchi fanned 11 while allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Rays in his Astros debut Friday.
The two runs came immediately on a double and a homer in the top of the first. Kikuchi went on to walk three, but he allowed just one more hit in the outing, and Taylor Scott was able to bail him out of a jam in the sixth. It didn’t get Kikuchi a decision, but it was a nice outing in what turned out to be a win for Houston.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #71
Josh Hader tossed a hitless ninth versus the Rays on Friday for his 22nd save.
Hader has recovered well from Monday’s blowup against the Pirates. He’s allowed just two hits in his last nine appearances. Unfortunately, one of them was a three-run homer that led to a loss.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #11
Shane Baz pitched 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball versus the Astros on Friday.
Baz struck out five and walked one. He got 15 missed swings on 80 pitches tonight, including seven of his 29 sliders. He’s yet to have a truly exceptional outing since his return from Tommy John, but it’s coming.
  • TB Right Fielder #10
Dylan Carlson hit his first homer of the year Friday in his second game for the Rays.
Kind of disappointing that it took the Rays a second game to fix Carlson, but one imagines he’ll now play like an MVP candidate the rest of the way. His homer in his first at-bat tonight was a two-run shot off Yusei Kikuchi. He hadn’t homered since doing so twice last June 20 against the Nationals. From that point on, he hit .180/.306/.214 for the Cardinals over the rest of 2023. He entered tonight at .194/.270/.234 in 2024.
