  • SD Relief Pitcher #1
After entering in the eighth with the Padres down one, Yuki Matsui failed to retire any of the three batters he faced Tuesday against the Giants and allowed two runs, one of which was earned.
Matsui was pulled after a single and two walks. He didn’t factor into the decision in the game, but this won’t help his case for challenging Robert Suarez for save chances.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #58
Brewers transferred LHP Rob Zastryzny to the 60-day injured list.
Zastrysny was already on the injured list with left elbow tendinitis. He was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Enoli Paredes, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The 32-year-old left-hander had a 1.17 ERA in nine appearances with Milwaukee this year.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #59
Brewers optioned RHP Elvis Peguero to Triple-A Nashville.
Peguero was sent down to make room for Enoli Paredes on the Brewers’ active roster. The 27-year-old right-hander has a 2.98 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings this year.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #49
Brewers activated RHP Enoli Paredes from the 60-day injured list.
Paredes had been out since July with right forearm tendinitis. He was a key member of the bullpen prior to his injury. Paredes had a 1.08 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings for the Brewers this year. He’s making his return just in time with the playoffs only a few weeks away.
  • TEX Shortstop #5
Corey Seager will have season-ending surgery on Friday for a sports hernia.
Seager was already on the injured list with hip discomfort, but after meeting with doctors it was determined that he has a sports hernia for the second time. The surgery will keep Seager out for the rest of the year. He hit .278 with 30 home runs, 68 runs scored, 74 RBI and one stolen base. Seager has hit at least 30 home runs and made the All-Star team in each of the last three years.
  • LAD Relief Pitcher #73
Dodgers signed LHP Zach Logue to a minor league contract.
Logue elected free agency last week after he was waived by the Braves. Logue was a ninth round pick by the Blue Jays in the 2017 MLB Draft and one of the prospects Toronto sent to Oakland in the trade for Matt Chapman. He wasn’t successful as a starter with the Athletics in 2022 and last appeared in the majors as a reliever with the Tigers last year. Logue isn’t eligible for the playoff roster, but could make an appearance with Los Angeles in the regular season if the Dodgers clinch and need a fresh arm to eat some innings.
  • BOS Left Fielder #30
Rob Refsnyder was scratched from the Red Sox lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Yankees with right wrist discomfort.
It’s unclear when Refsnyder suffered the injury or how long he’ll be out. He was replaced by Wilyer Abreu in right field and batting eighth.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #31
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters it’s likely RHP Liam Hendricks will be shut down for the rest of the season.
Hendricks had an MRI on his elbow after taking a break from pitching. Cora said the team will wait to hear from the doctors, but it’s likely Hendricks will be shut down. The 35-year-old was working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but might have to wait until next year to complete the comeback.
  • HOU Right Fielder #22
Jason Heyward’s first homer as an Astro was a two-run shot Thursday in the team’s 6-4 takedown of the A’s.
Heyward’s homer accounted for the only runs in seven innings against Mitch Spence, but the Astros rallied for four runs in the eighth to prevail. Heyward is 3-for-21 with four RBI in 12 appearances since joining the Astros on Aug. 29.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #59
Framber Valdez pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball against the A’s on Thursday.
Valdez, who had a 20-inning scoreless streak going, was pulled from a 2-1 game right after the lone run in the seventh. The A’s came back to tie the game in the eighth, leaving Valdez with a no-decision for his effort. Valdez isn’t going to win the AL Cy Young Award this year, but he should place on ballots once again. He’s 14-6 with a 2.91 ERA.
  • OAK Relief Pitcher #40
Mitch Spence yielded two runs in seven innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Astros.
Spence remained 0-3 in his last eight starts, even though he’s posted a solid 4.01 ERA during that stretch. In 18 starts since the beginning of June, he’s picked up just three wins, all of them coming against the Angels. Unfortunately, there are no more games versus those Angels on Oakland’s schedule. Spence will likely face the Cubs in his next outing.
