Lucas Giolito underwent a success right elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair with internal brace on Tuesday.
The good news is that Giolito did not have to get Tommy John surgery, the bad news is that he’s out for the season and likely at least half of the 2025 season. The surgery was completed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas in Birmingham, Alabama, who performed Garrett Whitlock’s Tommy John surgery a few years ago.
  • TEX Center Fielder #12

Rangers signed OF Kevin Pillar to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.
Pillar spent time with the Angels and White Sox last year. The 36-year-old center fielder hit .229 with eight home runs and 45 RBI in 100 games in 2024. The Rangers have Ezequiel Duran and Leody Tavares as bench options that can hit from the right side and should see decent playing time given Joc Pederson and Evan Carter’s struggles with lefties. It might take an injury for Pillar, another right-handed bat, to be anything more than a depth piece.
  • WSH Left Fielder #29
James Wood (quad) participated in defensive drills Sunday morning.
Wood was held out of Saturday’s game, but has still been taking part in batting practice in recent days. The 22-year-old outfielder was on the field for defensive drills Sunday morning despite dealing with left quad tendinitis. The injury doesn’t appear severe enough to impact his availability much at all going forward.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #50
Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports RHP JB Bukauskas has a significant lat injury.
Bukauskas had a setback during a bullpen session earlier this week. Now the 28-year-old right-hander is deciding between surgery or rehab. The former 1st-round pick by the Astros in 2017 dealt with lat issues last year, though it’s unclear if this is a new injury. A timeline for Bukauskas’ return won’t be known until he decides whether or not to have surgery, but he figures to miss at least a chunk of the season at this point.
  • PHI Third Baseman #37
Weston Wilson (oblique) will miss the next six weeks.
Wilson entered Phillies camp as the front runner for the final bench spot, but he sustained a mild oblique strain Friday and will miss the next six weeks. Buddy Kennedy, Cody Clemens and Cal Stevenson will battle for the last roster spot over the course of the rest of spring training.
  • STL Third Baseman #28
Chandler Rome and Katie Woo of The Athletic report there’s been “no traction” between the Cardinals and Astros in trade discussions regarding Nolan Arenado.
Rome and Woo also passed along that Arenado, who vetoed a deal to Houston in mid-December, hasn’t changed his mind about approving a trade to the Astros. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Saturday that he doesn’t feel anything is imminent. Despite St. Louis aggressively shopping the 33-year-old third baseman and Houston seemingly still interested in moving around Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve defensively to accommodate an addition at the hot corner, a deal sending Arenado to Houston seems like a long shot at best.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #67
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters LHP Zach Penrod will “be out for a while.”
Penrod experienced soreness after throwing a bullpen session earlier this week. While the MRI on his elbow revealed no structural damage, his manager acknowledged Saturday that Penrod is being shut down. Though surgery isn’t being considered at this time, the Red Sox figure to be cautious in his rehab, which could take months. The 27-year-old was slated to be part of Boston’s left-handed bullpen depth.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #45
Rays signed RHP Kodi Whitley to a minor league contract.
A former 27th-round pick by the Cardinals in 2017, Whitley, 30, is looking to resurrect his career after he was released by the Braves last March. Given how the Rays typically go through a number of bullpen arms over the course of a season, Whitley is potentially in a good spot to eventually make it back to the major leagues. He’ll have to shake off the rust after a year-long layoff, though.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #85
Dustin May is the listed starter for Sunday’s game against the Padres.
That’ll be May’s first start — albeit in an exhibition game rather than a regular-season one — since May 17, 2023. The right-hander showed electric stuff before injuries cost him essentially two seasons, and while he’s unlikely to make the Los Angeles rotation out of camp, he’s someone who has to be monitored for the short- and long-term.
  • MIL Left Fielder #16
Brewers signed OF Mark Canha to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
It’s a return to the Brewers for Canha, a place where he had success as he hit .287/.373/.427 with five homers and four stolen bases over 178 plate appearances back in 2023. The 36-year-old veteran will get a chance to show what he can do against left-handed pitching, and it wouldn’t be an upset if he made the Opening Day roster with a good showing in Arizona.
  • LAD Second Baseman
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Hyeseong Kim will see action in center field this spring.
Kim, 26, has seen time at second and shortstop so far this spring and will continue to do so, but the Dodgers want to see his speed in action in the middle of the outfield. Getting eligibility there on top of the middle infield would be a major boon for Kim’s fantasy prospective; especially with a chance to play in this loaded Los Angeles lineup.
