Rangers claimed INF/OF Jose Barrero off waivers from the Reds.
Barrero, who is out of minor league options this spring, represents a solid depth addition for the Rangers with both Corey Seager (abdominal) and Nathaniel Lowe (oblique) potentially starting the season on the injured list. The 25-year-old former top prospect has struggled at the highest level, posting a pedestrian .497 OPS with four homers and nine steals in 447 plate appearances since 2020. However, he’s capable of handling multiple positions defensively, which is appealing in a short-term bench role.
