Canaan Smith-Njigba went 1-for-3 with a home run in Friday’s game against the Braves.
It was Smith-Njigba’s second homer of spring camp. Smith-Njigba hit .280/.366/.473 with 15 homers and 21 steals for the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate last season and was picked up by Pittsburgh in February after he was designated for assignment by the Mariners.

Marlins selected the contract of LHP Dax Fulton and INF Jared Serna from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Fulton missed all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s expected to be ready for the start of the 2025 campaign. Serna was acquired in the Jazz Chisholm Jr. trade and hit 251/.337/.414 over three levels with 15 homers and 15 stolen bases.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #73
Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports that the Cubs are expected to designate Adbert Alzolay (elbow) for assignment.
Alzolay underwent Tommy John surgery in August and won’t be able to pitch until the end of 2025 at the earliest, with a good chance he won’t be ready until 2026. The right-hander would have been due a raise on his $2.1 million salary of 2024, and now likely will be signed to a two-year deal — with the majority of that cash coming not in 2025 — with a new club.
  • TB Center Fielder
Rays selected the contract of OF Jake Mangum from Triple-A Norfolk.
Tuesday is the deadline to add players to the 40-man roster or risk losing them to the Rule 5 draft, and the Rays won’t take the chance. Mangum performed well in his first year in the Tampa Bay system with an .800 OPS, 20 stolen bases and .317 average with Durham in 2024 over 104 games.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #55
Rays designated LHP Richard Lovelady for assignment.
Lovelady is off the 40-man roster, and it clears room for Jake Mangum. Lovelady should see interest on the waiver wire for a team looking to pile up left-handed options in their bullpen prior to the season.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher
Kiley McDaniel of ESPN reports that the Twins are selecting the contract of RHP Marco Raya.
Raya ranks fifth in MLB.com’s list of the Twins’ top prospects. The right-hander registered a 4.05 ERA and 103/44 K/BB across 25 starts; the final one in Triple-A and the previous 24 in Double-A. He’ll likely begin the year in St. Paul with a solid chance of making appearances for Minnesota over the summer.
  • Astros selected the contract of LHP Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land.
Gordon is now ineligible for the Rule 5 draft, and all-but-assuredly would have been selected. The 26-year-old forged a 3.94 ERA and 124/39 K/BB for Sugar Land in 2024.
  • OAK Center Fielder #75
Kiley McDaniel of ESPN reports that the Athletics have selected the contract of OF Denzel Clarke from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Clarke would have been eligible for the Rule 5 draft if the Athletics didn’t add him before Tuesday’s deadline. The 24-year-old forged a .784 OPS over 431 at-bats in 2024 and has a good chance to help the A’s in 2025.
  • FA Left Fielder #37
Multiple outlets report that Teoscar Hernández will decline the one-year qualifying offer from the Dodgers.
Not a surprise. Hernández was outstanding in his first — and possibly only — year with the Dodgers after his disappointing 2023 campaign with the Mariners The 32-year-old has drawn interest from several clubs thus far, and is looking at a higher AAV along with a multi-year deal this winter.
  • CWS Shortstop #85
White Sox selected the contract of INF Colson Montgomery and RHP Juan Carela from Triple-A Charlotte.
Montgomery is considered not just one of the top prospects in the Chicago system, but one of the best shortstop prospects in the sport. He did struggle in 2024 however with just a .710 OPS in Triple-A, but there’s still big-time upside in his bat. Carela has a chance to make starts in 2024 after reaching Double-A and forging a 3.71 ERA over 23 starts.
  • FA Shortstop #27
Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that Willy Adames has rejected the qualifying offer from the Brewers.
Adames was never likely to accept the one-year, $21.05 million offer, but now it’s official. The 29-year-old was sensational in 2024 and has already generated significant interest from around the league. It seems very unlikely that Adames will be a member of the Brew Crew in 2025.
