Cubs hired Ryan Flaherty as bench coach.
Flaherty was among the finalists for the Padres’ managerial vacancy, which ultimately went to former big league manager Mike Shildt. He’s been officially named to newly-minted Cubs manager Craig Counsell’s staff heading into 2024 after spending the last four years in San Diego. He’ll likely wind up managing somewhere in the future.

Former AL Rookie of the year Neftali Feliz is signing a minor league deal with the Mariners.
Feliz, who recorded 107 major league saves from 2009-17, has spent the past three years pitching in Mexico and also toiling for Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League. The 36-year-old has a 3.55 ERA in 393 1/3 career innings as a major leaguer.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #47
Angels signed LHP Victor González to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
The 29-year-old southpaw did a nice job in 27 appearances for the Yankees during the 2024 season, registering a 3.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and an 11/13 K/BB ratio over his 23 1/3 innings of work. Looking at what’s ahead of him on the depth chart currently, there’s no reason that González shouldn’t be able to compete for a spot in the Halos’ Opening Day bullpen.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #58
Yankees signed RHP Wilking Rodriguez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
The 34-year-old hurler hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since he appeared in two games for the Royals during the 2014 season. When healthy, he has proven himself to be valuable bullpen depth in the upper minor leagues, but the past few seasons have been plagued by shoulder issues. It’s a nice depth move for the Yankees.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #48
Braves signed RHP Wander Suero to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Suero, 33, made just one appearance at the big league level in 2024, allowing a hit and ultimately a run to the only batter that he faced in a loss against the Royals. He was terrific at Triple-A Sugar Land though, posting a 2.66 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 71/33 K/BB ratio over 67 2/3 innings of work. He makes for a very nice bullpen depth addition for the Braves.
  • TEX Relief Pitcher #57
Rangers designated RHP Roansy Contreras for assignment.
The Rangers needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the return of Nathan Eovaldi on Thursday and unfortunately, Contreras was the odd-man out this time around. He pitched pretty well in a bullpen role during the 2024 season — registering a 3.86 ERA and 52/25 K/BB ratio across 60 2/3 innings of work, so once again it wouldn’t be surprising to see another team take a shot at him on waivers.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #17
Rangers re-signed RHP Nathan Eovaldi to a three-year, $75 million contract.
The deal, which was agreed to on Tuesday, was officially announced by the Rangers on Thursday evening after they cleared a spot on their 40-man roster. Eovaldi has been a rock in the Rangers’ rotation for the last two seasons and will continue to be an upper-echelon fantasy option despite his underwhelming strikeout totals. His current average draft position sits just outside the top-200 players overall, which seems perfectly fair for what you’re getting here.
  • HOU Left Fielder #30
According to Jose de Jesus Ortiz of Ouresquina.com, the Astros look increasingly likely to trade superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker in the coming days.
The Cubs are viewed as the favorites here, as they have already had substantial discussions with Seiya Suzuki and Isaac Paredes rumored to be going back to the Astros in the return package. Ortiz also notes that the Yankees could be a team to keep an eye on. It’s certainly an intriguing situation and something to closely monitor over the next few days.
  • ARI Shortstop
Diamondbacks re-signed INF Andy Weber to a minor league contract.
The versatile 27-year-old infielder spent the 2024 season in the Diamondbacks’ organization where he slashed a healthy .305/.356/.503 with seven homers, 29 RBI and a 43/16 K/BB ratio over 225 plate appearances across three minor league levels. He’s likely to start the year at Triple-A Reno and could ultimately see action in a utility role with the Snakes if he continues to swing the bat like that.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher
Rangers signed RHP Daniel Missaki to a minor league contract.
The 28-year-old right-hander returned stateside in 2024 after spending a pair of seasons in Japan and a year in the Colombian Winter League, posting a 4.68 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 44/23 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings across three minor league affiliates for the Cubs. He has looked sharp in the Dominican Winter League and will add organizational bullpen depth for the Rangers.
  • TB Catcher #28
Rays signed C Danny Jansen to a one-year, $8.5 million contract.
The deal, which was agreed to last Friday, was officially announced on Thursday afternoon. Jansen will earn an $8 million salary for the 2025 season and the contract also includes a $12 million mutual option for the 2026 campaign with a $500,000 buyout. The 29-year-old backstop slashed an underwhelming .205/.309/.349 with nine homers and 24 RBI in 324 plate appearances between the Blue Jays and Red Sox in 2024. He makes for an intriguing second catcher option in deeper mixed leagues.
