  • SF General Manager
The Giants have extended the contract of president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi through 2026.
They also announced that new manager Bob Melvin’s contract would run through 2026. Zaidi has been the Giants’ POBO for five years. The team has topped .500 just once in those seasons, but that was a brilliant campaign that saw them win 107 games in 2021. As a result, the team is still 38 games over .500 during his tenure. Zaidi previously worked with Melvin in Oakland.
  • WAS Shortstop #5
CJ Abrams is back in the leadoff spot for the opening contest of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Pirates.
Abrams has been scuffling quite a bit of late, batting .184 (21-for-114) with three homers and nine steals over his last 30 games. The 23-year-old has been usurped by rookie Dylan Crews as Washington’s primary leadoff specialist over the past week, and has gotten some extra time off lately in an effort to get himself back on track at the dish. He’s back in the leadoff spot on Saturday afternoon with Crews dropped to seventh in the order.
  • PIT Center Fielder #22
Andrew McCutchen (knee) is back in the lineup for the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Nationals.
McCutchen was back in Pittsburgh’s initial lineup prior to Friday’s rainout after missing a pair of contests due to a lingering left knee issue. The 37-year-old veteran is back at designated hitter and batting cleanup for the front end of Saturday’s twin bill.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #36
Yankees activated RHP Clarke Schmidt from the 60-day injured list.
Schmidt will take the ball on Saturday at Wrigley Field for his first start in the big league since May 26. The 28-year-old right-hander was in the midst of a true breakthrough campaign, compiling a stellar 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67/20 K/BB ratio across 60 2/3 innings (11 starts) prior to hitting the injured list back in late May with a right lat strain. There might be some initial workload restrictions, but Schmidt is worthy of a roster spot in all fantasy formats down the home stretch.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #71
Yankees activated RHP Ian Hamilton from the 60-day injured list.
Hamilton returns to New York’s high-leverage mix ahead of Saturday’s showdown against the Cubs at Wrigley Field following a nearly three-month absence recovering from a right lat strain.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #57
Yankees designated RHP Nick Burdi for assignment.
Burdi loses his spot on New York’s 40-man roster with both Clark Schmidt and Ian Hamilton returning from the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game at Wrigley Field. The 31-year-old righty hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since late May due to a right hip injury.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #53
Yankees designated RHP Phil Bickford for assignment.
Bickford loses his spot on New York’s 40-man roster with both Clark Schmidt and Ian Hamilton returning from the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game at Wrigley Field. The 29-year-old righty made eight relief appearances for the Yankees after being brought up back in late August.
  • MIN Second Baseman
Twins 2B prospect Payton Eeles clobbered a two-run homer on Friday for Triple-A St. Paul.
Eeles seems to fit the bill for fantasy managers searching for an off-the-radar prospect that could make an impact in the coming weeks, especially in extremely deep mixed leagues. The unheralded 24-year-old infielder went undrafted out of Coastal Carolina last year and spent time with the Chicago Dogs and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent American Association and Atlantic League, respectively, before getting a shot earlier this season with the Twins. He’s batted .305/.436/.476 with eight homers and 33 steals in 401 plate appearances over 97 games across three level, reaching Triple-A St. Paul back in early July.
  • BOS Relief Pitcher #31
Liam Hendriks (elbow) still hopes to return this month after suffering a setback earlier this week at Triple-A Worcester.
Hendriks, who is in the final stages of his lengthy rehabilitation from last year’s Tommy John surgery, was unable to make back-to-back rehab appearances this week due to the setback, which would’ve been the final hurdle before being cleared to make his season debut. The 35-year-old veteran reliever has reeled off six scoreless appearances on his rehab assignment, but it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be activated in the near future. The Red Sox could certainly use his help in the late innings, especially with closer Kenley Jansen dealing with a lat issue.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #23
FishOnFirst.com’s Isaac Azout reports Max Meyer is headed to the injured list.
Meyer was slated to take the ball on Sunday against the Phillies, but that doesn’t appear to be happening anymore. No word yet on the specific injury or severity. Even if it winds up being just a minimum stay on the injured list, it’ll likely limit Meyer to just one or two additional outings before the regular season wraps up. The 25-year-old former top prospect has surrendered at least four earned runs in four of his last five outings since August 11 and holds a calamitous 5.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 46/19 K/BB ratio across 57 innings (11 starts) this season at the highest level.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher
Rangers RHP prospect Kumar Rocker struck out eight and allowed two runs over five innings on Friday for Triple-A Round Rock.
Rocker has been appointment viewing his last few outings, tallying 18 punchouts, while allowing just five baserunners in a pair of starts since arriving at Triple-A Round Rock. The 24-year-old has clearly re-established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball in the wake of last year’s Tommy John surgery. At this point, we can’t rule out the possibility that he gets a late-season cup of coffee with the Rangers.
