  • STL Starting Pitcher #50
Adam Wainwright officially announced his retirement from professional baseball on Sunday.
The 42-year-old got one final plate appearance in Sunday’s game — going down on strikes against Alan Busenitz in the eighth inning. Wainwright concludes an outstanding big league career with a 200-128 record, 3.53 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 2,202/736 K/BB ratio across 2668 1/3 innings over 18 seasons with the Cardinals. He also recorded three saves. Best of luck to Wainwright in the next chapter of his life.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #48
Emmanuel Clase tossed a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the save against the Twins on Monday.
The save was Clase’s 46th of the season. He struck out two batters in a perfect inning of work. Clase has easily been the best closer in baseball this season. He lowered his ERA to 0.65 with the scoreless inning. With about two weeks left in the season, a 50-save year is within reach.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #49
Pablo Lopez allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings and got a no-decision against the Guardians on Monday.
Lopez gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out four. He had won each of his last four starts. Lopez was in line to win again until Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run go-ahead home run in the eighth inning. He’s allowed three runs or less in 11 of his last 12 starts and has a 2.11 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings in that time. Lopez is 15-8 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 187 strikeouts in 175 2/3 innings on the year. The 28-year-old right-hander is set to face the Red Sox on the road this weekend.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #16
Matthew Boyd allowed three runs (two earned) in 2 2/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Guardians’ 4-3 victory over the Twins on Monday.
Boyd gave up five hits, walked three and struck out five. Boyd’s pitched pretty well for the Guardians this season, but hasn’t been able to complete five innings in his last two starts. In his last start against the White Sox, he struck out nine in 4 1/3 innings and his pitch count was elevated due to the strikeouts. On Monday, Boyd’s command was subpar and he was removed after throwing 31 pitches in the third inning alone. Boyd is 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 40 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings this year. The 33-year-old left-hander is set to face the Cardinals on the road this weekend.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #78
Angels recalled LHP Kenny Rosenberg from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Rosenberg has a 6.87 ERA in 18 1/3 innings for the Angels this season. He’s stretched out to start if the Angels need that from him — he has a fine 4.21 ERA in 21 starts in a tough environment at Salt Lake this season — but it looks like he’ll go into middle relief initially.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #36
Angels optioned RHP Caden Dana to Double-A Rocket City.
Kenny Rosenberg is taking his place. Dana gave up five homers and posted a 10.45 ERA in three starts after a callup that never should have happened in the first place. It’s not a disaster how things worked out, but now the Angels will be using a 40-man roster spot this winter on a 20-year-old who wouldn’t have been on there otherwise. Dana might be ready to help in the first half of next year, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be on the team out of spring training.
  • CWS Third Baseman #10
After holding the third baseman out of Monday’s lineup, White Sox manager Grady Sizemore said he doesn’t have a set plan for Yoán Moncada returning to the lineup.
Sizemore indicated that the priority was getting at-bats for Bryan Ramos and Miguel Vargas. It looks like Moncada will finish out his White Sox career as a bench guy.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #41
Jorge López, out since Sept. 2 with a groin strain, is likely to come off the injured list within the next few days.
López gave up six runs in two-thirds of an inning in his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, but the Cubs are going to bring him back anyway. It’s unlikely that he’ll be in line for saves.
  • CLE Center Fielder #76
Guardians prospect George Valera suffered a ruptured patella tendon playing for Triple-A Columbus last week and will be sidelined for 6-9 months after surgery.
It was obvious something was very wrong after Valera slipped and had his leg go out from under him on the warning track while he was trying to get position to attempt a jumping catch last Tuesday. This is better than an ACL tear, but it probably will sideline him at the beginning of next season. Valera hit .248/.337/.452 in 90 games for Columbus before getting hurt. There might be some chance of him getting bumped from the Guardians’ 40-man roster this winter.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #31
After stepping away over the weekend, Tyler Glasnow will likely rejoin the Dodgers on the upcoming homestand, manager Dave Roberts said.
Some eyebrows were raised after Glasnow left the team following the news that he was likely out for the season with sprained elbow, but Roberts said it’s “an excused absence” and that the team knows where he is.
  • LAA Center Fielder #27
Mike Trout indicated that he’s open to moving to an outfield corner or even DH in an effort to remain healthy next season.
Trout has resumed hitting after his second knee surgery of the year, and he expects to have a rather normal offseason. The position change possibility is noteworthy from a player who has resisted such ideas in the past. Still, it’d be a shame to see him become a full-time DH. It might also be worrisome from a fantasy perspective; many players have struggled to adapt to DHing, and Trout has hit just .214/.388/.458 in 81 career games in that spot. Of course, it probably factors in there that a lot of that DHing has been a product of him being banged up at the time.
