  • OAK Relief Pitcher #65
Trevor May struck out three in 1 1/3 scoreless innings for a save Saturday against the Tigers.
May’s peripherals aren’t terrific, but since returning from an IL stint due to anxiety in May, he has a sterling 2.11 ERA in 38 1/3 innings. He’s given up runs in just one of his last 21 appearances, though he did allow five runs — three earned — in that one. He’s now at 20 saves for the year, something no one could have seen coming five or even three months ago.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #44
Ben Joyce was diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement.
Joyce was placed on the 15-day IL with inflammation in his shoulder, and it seems likely that the 23-year-old will miss the rest of the season even if he’s eligible to return September 22 for the final week. The Angels are still awaiting MRI results on Joyce, but no matter the result it’s hard to see another competitive pitch from the flame-thrower in 2024.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #68
Jose Marte underwent shoulder surgery Saturday.
Marte’s surgery was deemed successful. The 28-year-old will miss the rest of the 2024 season and could compete for a bullpen spot with the Angels in spring training if he’s ready to roll.
  • SF Shortstop #49
Tyler Fitzgerald (back) is not in the lineup Saturday against the Padres.
Fitzgerald is day-to-day with tightness in his lower back. Marco Luciano is the starting second baseman, with Brett Wisely moving over to shortstop while Fitzgerald recuperates.
  • TOR Center Fielder #9
Joey Loperfido left Saturday’s game against the Cardinals with adductor soreness.
Loperfido left in the fifth inning and appeared to have some discomfort after hitting a double two innings earlier. The 25-year-old will likely test the adductor/hip area to see if he can go Sunday against the Cards in the finale.
  • ARI Relief Pitcher #56
Diamondbacks selected to contract of LHP Brandon Hughes from Triple-A Reno.
Hughes is added back to the MLB roster for the second time, and to say he wasn’t effective his last go round with the D-Backs is quite the understatement as seen in a 10.29 ERA and 2.14 WHIP in 14 innings. He’ll be low-leverage depth, and he takes the roster spot of Ryne Nelson.
  • ARI Catcher #12
Diamondbacks designated C Andrew Knizner for assignment.
Knizner is now off the 40-man roster. It’s possible someone could put in a claim on the 29-year-old to add to their catching depths, but it’s just as likely he finishes the year in Triple-A while becoming a free agent at the end of the year.
  • TOR Second Baseman #36
Davis Schneider went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the Blue Jays’ 7-2 win over the Cardinals on Saturday.
Schneider got the start against a right-hander on Saturday and rewarded the Blue Jays at the plate, going yard for a solo homer off Kyle Gibson in the third inning. He knocked a base hit in the sixth to drive in another run and collected his third hit of the game in the eighth with a single. The 25-year-old is hitting .197/.287/.346 with 11 homers, 43 runs scored, 42 RBI, and six steals across 414 plate appearances.
  • STL Right Fielder #18
Jordan Walker went 1-for-2 with a solo homer and a walk against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Walker provided the early offense for St. Louis in their loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday, taking Jose Berrios deep for a solo homer in the third inning. It was just his third home run of the season, with all three coming in September. The 22-year-old outfielder is slashing .179/.242/.321 with the three homers and 11 RBI across 124 plate appearances.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #17
José Berríos allowed one run with four strikeouts over seven innings in a win over the Cardinals on Saturday.
Berríos was outstanding against the Cardinals, holding them to one run over seven frames. The only run allowed came on a solo homer by Jordan Walker in the third inning. Berríos allowed only one other hit and walked two batters while striking out four. The 30-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.44 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 143/50 K/BB ratio across 183 1/3 innings. He’ll take on the Rays in Tampa Bay on Friday.
  • STL Starting Pitcher #44
Kyle Gibson allowed five runs -- one earned -- with one strikeout over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Gibson retired the first seven batters until Davis Schneider took him deep for a solo homer in the third inning. He later loaded the bases with one out in the sixth before a throwing error brought a run in. Gibson would depart with the bases loaded and all three inherited runners would come in to score. The 36-year-old right-hander will take a 4.11 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and a 144/62 K/BB ratio across 159 2/3 innings into a start against the Pirates in St. Louis on Thursday.
