Jordan Lawlar

AZ Shortstop #10

Jordan Lawlar has a fracture in his right wrist after being hit by a pitch Thursday against the Braves and will go on the IL.

X-rays were negative last night, but a CT scan found the fracture, and he’s expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Adrian Del Castillo is set to come off the IL and replace him on the active roster. Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa will get some extra at-bats, and Jose Fernandez will keep playing fairly regularly for now. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will likely beat Lawlar back from the IL, which might result in some playing time questions when Lawlar returns.

Alejandro Kirk left Friday’s game in the 10th inning with an apparent left thumb injury.

A foul tip deflected off the bottom of Kirk’s mitt and left him in a lot of pain, so much so that he walked off without any attempt to stay in. If there’s a break, he’ll probably miss at least a month. Brandon Valenzuela would likely be called up to share time with Tyler Heineman.

Sonny Gray

BOS Starting Pitcher #54

Sonny Gray threw six innings of two-run ball to earn his first victory for the Red Sox in a 5-2 defeat of the Padres on Friday.

The runs came in the fifth, which got started because Ceddanne Rafaela lost a fly to center in the sun to give Miguel Andujar a triple. A single and a double followed. Gray allowed just one hit over the other five innings and walked none. His next turn will come against the Brewers. He went 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA in four starts against them for the Cardinals last year.

Aroldis Chapman

BOS Relief Pitcher #44

Aroldis Chapman tossed a hitless ninth with a three-run lead for his second save Friday against the Padres.

Chapman’s save was the 369th of his career, moving him past Jonathan Papelbon for 11th place all-time. Papelbon was at the game working for NESN and said he was excited to see his “record” broken. We’re kind of hoping there was a ceremony. Chapman needs nine more saves to bump Joe Nathan from the 10th spot all-time.

Michael King

SD Starting Pitcher #34

Michael King surrendered four runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Red Sox.

A Boston College product, King was one of the Red Sox’s rumored targets this winter before re-signing with the Padres as a free agent. He was at two runs through five today before giving up a Willson Contreras homer and a single in the sixth. He rebounded to strike out Caleb Durbin but then was pulled for Wandy Peralta with lefty Marcelo Mayer up. That switch didn’t work out for the Padres, as Mayer homered to add the fourth run the King’s total. King will face the Pirates next week.

Marcelo Mayer

BOS 3rd Baseman #11

Marcelo Mayer had a two-run homer and a double Friday in the win over the Padres.

He also reached on a catcher’s interference, not that it does his statistics any good. Fernando Tatis Jr. almost made a fantastic play on Mayer’s homer to right, but he came up just a little short at the bullpen wall in Fenway. Not only was it a huge hit for the slumping Red Sox, but that it came off a quality lefty reliever in Wandy Peralta might be good for Mayer’s playing time as he seeks to break out of a platoon role. Mayer is 5-for-17 with four extra-base hits in the early going.

Trevor Story

BOS Shortstop #10

Trevor Story went 0-for-4 as Boston’s No. 2 hitter Friday, dropping his average to .121.

The Red Sox are trying to show Story respect by batting him second, but it’s just not his role at all. Even in a really good 2025 season, he had just a .308 OBP with his 176/33 K/BB in 654 plate appearances. Right now, he has a 14/0 K/B in 33 plate appearances, so his .121 OBP matches his average. Caleb Durbin is struggling, too, but he’d make a lot more sense as a No. 2 hitter, with Story dropping to the sixth spot.

Cade Horton

CHC Starting Pitcher #22
Cade Horton left his start Friday because of right forearm discomfort.

That was not what we wanted to hear. Horton was removed after signaling to the dugout following his 17th pitch of the game against the Guardians. The Cubs won’t want to take chances with their 24-year-old, so he’ll probably go on the IL even if they get good news from here. Colin Rea could replace him in the rotation, with Javier Assad perhaps being called up to pitch in middle relief.

Isaac Paredes

HOU 3rd Baseman #15
Astros placed INF Isaac Paredes on the bereavement list.

He’ll be absent for at least three games, with Shay Whitcomb coming up to replace him. Assuming that Jeremy Peña is ready to play full-time again after being in a reduced role due to his finger injury, he’ll start at shortstop and Carlos Correa will go back to third base. Paredes is 5-for-22 with four doubles and five RBI through six games.

Ben Rice

NYY 1st Baseman #22

Ben Rice went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI as the Yankees beat the Marlins on Friday.

Rice did his work on the Marlins bullpen, launching a solo home run to the short porch off Michael Petersen and adding a two-run double off the top of the wall in right center in the bottom of the eighth. Rice, who also managed to challenge a strikeout pitch that wasn’t even close to the edge of the plate early in the game, is hitting .409/.500/.864 with two homers and eight RBI in the early going. Our advice: Keep swinging.
