Giants’ pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt was shut down on Friday and has been diagnosed with a left elbow sprain.
That’s never what you want to hear. The 22-year-old southpaw was the Giants’ second-round selection from the 2022 draft and Giants went nearly double the slot value to get him under contract. The degree of the sprain is not yet known — and will determine how long Whisenhunt will be sidelined for.

Brooks Raley, who had Tommy John surgery 12 1/2 months ago, will begin a rehab assignment at Low-A St. Lucie on Tuesday.
That’d seem to set up Raley to return right after the All-Star break if things go well. Raley had a 2.80 ERA in 54 2/3 innings for the Mets in 2023 and pitched seven scoreless innings last year before getting hurt, so he could turn into a key piece of the pen if he’s right.
Fantasy impact of Ohtani returning to mound
James Schiano explains the fantasy implications of Shohei Ohtani being expected to make his Dodgers pitching debut Monday night, sharing how fantasy baseball team managers should handle Ohtani's return to the mound.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher
Thomas White, the 35th overall pick in the 2023 draft, is being promoted to Double-A Pensacola.
White had a 2.83 ERA and a 53/17 K/BB over 35 innings in nine starts for High-A Beloit. He’s one of the game’s top pitching prospects, but he’s probably not going to be rushed to the majors by a Marlins team that is at least two years away from contending. Maybe he’ll debut next summer if he remains healthy.
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #55
Nationals selected the contract of 3B Brady House from Triple-A Rochester.
José Tena was sent down last night to open up a spot. The 22-year-old House, who was drafted 11th overall in 2021, will make his major league debut after hitting .304/.353/.519 with 13 homers for Rochester. Expectations are that he’ll be the everyday third baseman for now. House lacks plate discipline, but there’s the chance he’ll hit for a reasonable average and decent enough power to stick around. The guess here, though, is that he’s not quite ready yet.
  • WSH Left Fielder #51
Nationals recalled OF Daylen Lile from Triple-A Rochester.
Just as the Nats were starting Robert Hassell III over Jacob Young, we’d expect them to do the same with the 22-year-old Lile. He hit .194/.257/.355 over 36 plate appearances in his first taste of the majors while Young was on the injured list a couple of weeks ago, but he’s been more productive than Hassell in the minors this season, coming in at .328/.377/.503 with four homers and 12 steals in 47 games between Double-A and Triple-A. His fantasy value will likely be limited to NL-only leagues.
  • WSH 1st Baseman #18
Nationals designated 1B Juan Yepez for assignment.
The move makes room for Brady House on the 40-man roster. Yepez almost made the Nationals out of spring training, but the team picked José Tena over him then. The 27-year-old had since hit .199/.273/.301 in Triple-A, suggesting that the Nationals weren’t missing much. He should clear waivers.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #37
Orioles placed LHP Cade Povich on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation.
The move comes a day after Povich pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings and got a win as a bulk guy. The Orioles could turn to Trevor Rogers in his place, though Rogers, who had a great outing in a spot start last month, has resumed struggling for the most part in Triple-A. Brandon Young is still on the rehab trail, so he’s not an option just yet.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #60
Orioles recalled RHP Colin Selby from Triple-A Norfolk.
Selby will join the pen, though perhaps only until a starter is needed in Cade Povich’s place. The 27-year-old Selby has allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings for the Orioles this season.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #99
    Mets released LHP Anthony Gose.
Gose, signed a minor league contract in December, had a 4.30 ERA and a 25/14 K/BB in 23 innings out of the pen for Triple-A Syracuse. The former outfielder has a 4.78 ERA in 31 major league relief appearances, all of them coming with the Guardians.
  • NYY Right Fielder #27
Giancarlo Stanton, out since the start of the season with elbow problems, will come off the injured list and be in the starting lineup for Monday’s game.
It’s unclear if Stanton will be an upgrade over Ben Rice as the Yankees’ primary DH, but it’s going to happen anyway. Trent Grisham and Jasson Domínguez could also lose some playing time. Stanton went 3-for-11 with a double in three games during his rehab assignment for Double-A Somerset. He hit .233/.239/.475 in 114 games last season, which is pretty close to what Rice is doing this year (.227/.311/.460).
  • COL 1st Baseman #4
Rockies recalled 1B Michael Toglia from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Keston Hiura was bumped from the roster to make room. Toglia, demoted May 31 after hitting .194/.266/.349 over the first two months, figures to get his starting job back after coming in at .273/.353/.568 with three homers in 11 minor league games. He still might wind up hitting enough to help in mixed leagues — he was certainly helpful for a time last year — but there’s probably no urgent need to grab him right away.
