With Yu Chang returning from the 60-day IL on Friday, the Red Sox needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster and it looks like Sherriff was the odd-man out. He has posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 5/2 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings at the big league level this season. He could draw some interest on waivers.

STL Starting Pitcher #60

Cardinals LHP prospect Quinn Mathews threw five shutout innings for Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Mathews also allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out eight. It was his best start of the season, but he does still sit with a 5.56 ERA on the year. He’ll need to string a few more of these together before being in the mix for a call-up.

Mets RHP prospect Jonah Tong allowed six runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.

Tong did strike out 10 in this one, but he also walked three and allowed two home runs. The 22-year-old has missed plenty of bats so far this season with a 23/10 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings, but he has also allowed 15 runs (12 earned) on 11 hits. He’ll need to keep working on getting the command in check.

NYY Relief Pitcher #57

Yankees recalled RHP Angel Chivilli from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Chivilli struggled this spring but has thrown 8 1/3 scoreless innings at Triple-A this season while allowing just two hits and posting a 9/2 K/BB ratio.

Andrew Painter

PHI Starting Pitcher #24
Phillies have changed their starting rotation for the upcoming series with the Braves, with Taijuan Walker starting on Friday, Cristopher Sánchez starting Saturday, and Andrew Painter on Sunday.

Manager Rob Thomson said he wanted to break up his two righties, but that means that Painter will be on a full week’s rest since his last performance was also on Sunday. Sánchez will now be pitching on regular rest.

Wilyer Abreu

BOS Right Fielder #52
Wilyer Abreu is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Twins.

The Twins are throwing a right-handed pitcher, so Red Sox manager Alex Cora mentioned that this was a planned day off for Abreu. It just comes at a bad time with Willson Contreras (back) injured and both Caleb Durbin and Carlos Narvaez getting a day off. Roman Anthony will be in right field for this one with Masataka Yoshida at designated hitter and batting third.

Juan Soto

NYM Right Fielder #22

Juan Soto (calf) has begun his running progression.

Soto has been participating in baseball activities, including batting practice in an indoor cage, but he had not begun a running progression until Tuesday. Soto strained his calf on April 3rd and was expected to only be out for three weeks. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza hinted that the team would get “creative” with Soto’s rehab, which might mean that they simulate at-bats for him and don’t send him out on a rehab assignment. We’ll keep you posted, but Soto could return before the month is out.

Ryan Kreidler

MIN Center Fielder #5

Ryan Kreidler is starting at third base and batting ninth against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

We now have a large enough sample size of games with Royce Lewis on the injured list, so we can say with certainty that Kreidler is the regular third baseman against lefties and Tristan Gray will start against righties. Unfortunately, neither one of them will likely be fantasy relevant.

Ketel Marte

AZ 2nd Baseman #4

Ketel Marte is starting at designated hitter and batting lead off on Wednesday against the Orioles.

Marte was scratched from the lineup on Tuesday with lower back tightness, but he’s right back in there after one day. We’ll see if he can make it through this game without a flareup before considering him fully healthy, but this is obviously a great sign.

BAL Right Fielder #12
All of Dylan Beavers, Colton Cowser, and Leody Tavares are not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

With Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound, all three left-handed hitters will take a seat. Blaze Alexander will stay in the lineup and play centerfield with Johnathan Rodriguez hitting cleanup and playing right field and Weston Wilson hitting fifth and playing left field.

Kevin McGonigle

DET Shortstop #7

Tigers signed SS Kevin McGonigle to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension.

McGonigle follows behind Konnor Griffin and Colt Emerson as high-end prospects who have inked long-term extensions before completing their first month in the big leagues. McGonigle’s deal is the biggest extension signed by a prospect ever, breaking Griffin’s record ($140 million) from last week. The 21-year-old is off to a great start to his MLB career, and will now be a fixture in the middle of the Tigers lineup for years to come.
