  • FA Relief Pitcher #46
Blue Jays designated RHP Zach Thompson for assignment.
Toronto needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster and Thompson wound up drawing the short straw. He hasn’t appeared in the majors this season after being acquired from the Pirates back in January.

  • SD Starting Pitcher #11
Padres placed RHP Yu Darvish on the restricted list.
Padres’ manager Mike Shildt told reporters on Saturday that Darvish is dealing with a personal matter involving his family but wouldn’t elaborate. It’s not clear how long he’ll be away from the team for. The 37-year-old hurler is battling elbow inflammation in addition to his strained groin. Once he’s back with the club and ready physically, he’s likely to need at least a couple of rehab starts before he’s ready to return to action.
  • NYM Left Fielder #9
Brandon Nimmo went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base against the Pirates on Saturday.
Nimmo’s stolen base was his eighth of the year. He was 0-for-10 with two walks in his last three games. Nimmo is hitting .249 with an .810 OPS and 52 RBI on the season.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #23
David Peterson allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Mets’ 5-2 victory over the Pirates on Saturday.
Peterson gave up five hits, walked two and struck out five. Peterson has won three of his seven starts for the Mets this year and it would’ve been four if he completed five innings on Saturday. He has a 3.58 ERA, but his xFIP is 4.51. This is not the David Peterson we’re used to seeing. In 2022, he had a 10.7 K/9, 3.83 ERA and 3.31 xFIP. Last year, he had a 10.3 K/9, 5.03 ERA, and 3.59 xFIP. Last year he was unlucky with his ERA, but this year his strikeouts are way down. His K/9 is just 6.45 this year and that’s likely to catch up to him eventually given where his xFIP is. The 28-year-old left-hander is set to face the Nationals at home next week.
  • OAK Center Fielder #12
Max Schuemann hit a three-run homer as the Athletics clobbered the Orioles on Saturday.
  • BAL Catcher #35
Adley Rutschman hit a three-run homer in a blowout loss Saturday to the Athletics.
  • OAK Third Baseman #22
Miguel Andujar went 3-for-4 with three RBI in a blowout of the Orioles on Saturday.
  • OAK Left Fielder #25
Brent Rooker went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in a 19-8 rout of the Orioles on Saturday.
The Athletics have now scored 19 runs twice in 2024, which is two times more than any other team in baseball. This is a weird sport. Rooker hit one of five homers for the A’s, and he got the party started early with a three-run shot off a completely ineffective Cade Povich. He also scored three runs because of course he did, everyone did. That’s not true but it sure felt that way. Rooker has homered 18 times while driving in 54 runs in a very impressive first-half of 2024, even while playing for one of the worst teams in baseball.
  • OAK Starting Pitcher #46
Luis Medina gave up just one run in five innings to get a win over the Orioles on Saturday.
Medina was handed 19 runs of support, but he only needed two. The 25-year-old did have some traffic while allowing six hits and three walks, but he was able to work around that self-inflicted damage to just the run while striking out three. The right-hander has allowed two runs over his last two starts in his 11 innings to lower his ERA to a not-horrific 4.37. It’d be a mistake to expect similar results against the Phillies next weekend.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #37
Cade Povich allowed eight runs in one-plus innings in a loss to the Athletics on Saturday.
Yikes. Povich allowed a three-run homer in the first to Brent Rooker, and then was absolutely shellacked in the second frame while giving up another three-run blast to Max Schuemann and two more runs after he left the game. Again, yikes. Povich has shown some solid stuff at various times since being brought up, but if you need any evidence that the command is still a work in progress, see above. If he stays in the rotation, he’s lined up to face the Yankees on Friday.
  • OAK Catcher #23
Shea Langeliers homered and drove in three runs in a blowout win over the Orioles on Saturday.
