Blue Jays signed C Steve Berman to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Berman split last season between the Blue Jays and Twins at the Triple-A level, batting .212/.342/.392 with eight homers and one steal across 261 plate appearances. The 28-year-old backstop provides Toronto with some emergency catching depth behind firmly-entrenched starters Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen.

Wilmer Flores finished 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk in the Giants’ 5-2 defeat of the Brewers on Monday.
The homer off Grant Anderson was Flores’s seventh of the year and gave him 24 RBI. There’s very little to suggest he’s going to keep it up, but he’s already collected more homers and RBI in 23 games this season than he did in 71 games last year. Mixed leaguers should continue to shy away,
  • SF Starting Pitcher #38
Robbie Ray gave up two runs over five innings Monday in a no-decision against the Brewers.
Ray had an encouraging spring, but he’s given up five homers and walked 18 batters in 24 1/3 innings over his first five regular-season starts. His 4.07 ERA isn’t bad, but nothing so far has suggested he’s about to start performing better. He’ll face the Rangers next.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #60
Hayden Birdsong notched his first win after pitching three scoreless innings out of the pen Monday against the Brewers.
Birdsong struck out four and lowered his ERA to 1.38. He might have some mixed-league value right now had the Giants given him a rotation spot, but it looks like the current plan is to keep him in middle relief for the long haul. He’s pitched 2-3 innings in five of his six appearances to date.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #75
Camilo Doval turned in a perfect ninth with a three-run lead for his third save Monday against the Brewers.
Ryan Walker, who blew a save Sunday, was unavailable after throwing 44 pitches the previous two days. It’s unlikely that Doval has made up any ground on Walker since Opening Day, but he’s hanging around as a perfectly fine fallback in the closer’s role.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #46
Quinn Priester yielded two runs in four innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Giants.
Priester didn’t give up much hard contact, but he did walk four, which resulted in a pair of runs when combined with the four singles. He has a 1.93 ERA in three starts for the Brewers, but his rotation spot could be in jeopardy once Brandon Woodruff is activated. He’ll keep trying to add to his case to stick around against the Cardinals this weekend.
  • MIL 2nd Baseman #21
Caleb Durbin hit his first big-league homer, a two-run shot off Robbie Ray, in Monday’s loss to the Giants.
Durbin’s homer left the bat at 100.1 mph and was projected at 375 feet. He’s probably not going to contribute much in the round-tripper department, but if he’s productive enough to remain in the Brewers lineup, his stolen base ability will likely result in some mixed-league value.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #58
Cubs signed RHP Peter Solomon to a minor league contract.
Solomon last pitched in the big leagues back in 2023 when he made 26 appearances for the Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old doesn’t miss a ton of bats and has struggled with his control in recent years. He’s merely extra organizational relief depth at this stage of his career.
  • DET 2nd Baseman #39
Zach McKinstry went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and a walk to lead the Tigers to a 6-4 win over the Padres on Monday.
The Tigers probably would have non-tendered McKinstry over the winter had he not agreed to a deal before the deadline. They’re awfully glad he did now, as he’s come through with a .314/.424/.471 line while getting a whole lot more time than expected in the early going. We’re not at all optimistic that he’ll keep it up, but it’s been a fun time thus far.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #54
Keider Montero allowed four runs — three earned — through 4 1/3 innings in his start against the Padres on Monday.
Montero had a 6-2 lead to work with after three, but he walked four and failed to last long enough to get the win. This leaves him with a 7.71 ERA in his two spot starts over the last week. He’ll likely return to Triple-A now.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #19
Will Vest earned his second save with a perfect ninth Monday versus the Padres.
Vest struck out one while protecting a two-run lead. Tommy Kahnle is the current favorite for saves in Detroit, but he’d pitched three of the last four days. Now Vest has done that, so he’ll probably be down Tuesday. Vest, though, is pretty interesting in deeper leagues; he definitely fits the closer mold better than Kahnle.
