  • FA Relief Pitcher #63
Eric Hanhold has elected free agency.
The Pirates claimed Hanhold after he was designated for assignment by the Orioles in early March. The 28-year-old spent the entire season in Triple-A Indianapolis and posted a 3.40 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 49/24 K/BB ratio over 53 innings. He will look to join another team this offseason, most likely on a minor league contract.

  • SD Right Fielder #23
Fernando Tatis Jr. is hitting second and playing right field against the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday.
The Padres aren’t making any changes to their regular lineup in the pivotal Game 1 matchup against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Dodgers. The full lineup behind Dylan Cease for the Padres: DH Luis Arraez, RF Tatis Jr., LF Jurickson Profar, 3B Manny Machado, CF Jackson Merrill, SS Xander Bogaerts, 2B Jake Cronenworth, 1B Donovan Solano and Kyle Higashioka hitting ninth and catching.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #22
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Clayton Kershaw (toe) won’t return in the 2024 postseason.
“Where he’s at right now, physically, the foot, the toe, just is not cooperating,” Roberts said. “It’s actually getting worse. Yeah, this is it for Clayton for 2024.’' Kershaw was limited to just seven starts and 30 innings because of injuries, and he forged a 4.50 ERA and 24/9 K/BB in his seven starts. He should be back in 2025, but there’s more risk than reward in the future Hall of Famer’s profile.
  • LAD Shortstop #11
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Miguel Rojas (adductor) is in the lineup for Game 1 of the NLDS against the Padres on Saturday.
Rojas has a torn adductor muscle and he’ll need surgery in the offseason, but he’ll be able to play through it through the postseason.
  • LAD Relief Pitcher #99
Joe Kelly picked up a shoulder injury during a simulated game prior to the NLDS against the Padres.
This explains why Kelly is not on the roster for the series against the NLDS against the Padres. The right-hander will be eligible to return in the coming playoff series, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that he wouldn’t be available until the World Series, if the Dodgers were able to advance.
  • LAD First Baseman #5
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Freddie Freeman is still receiving treatment on his ankle.
Roberts said he was still hopeful that Freeman would be able to play Saturday in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Padres, but “not as hopeful as yesterday.” The 35-year-old first baseman is trying to come back from a sprain that typically sidelines a player for 4-to-6 weeks. The Dodgers lineup is expected out soon, and there’s no guarantee Freeman will be in it against San Diego.
  • CLE Center Fielder #8
Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer as part of a five-run first in the Guardians’ 7-0 shutout of the Tigers in Saturday’s Game 1.
The Guardians got all of those runs before an out was even recorded, with Thomas homering as the first batter off Reese Olsen after opener Tyler Holton was pulled. The Guardians were pretty quiet the rest of the way, but it never did turn into a contest, as Cleveland was just fine using its best relievers in advance of Sunday’s off day. Game 2 will come Monday and feature a Tarik Skubal-Matthew Boyd matchup that would seem to favor Detroit.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #28
Tanner Bibee was lifted with a 5-0 lead after 4 2/3 innings Saturday in Game 1 against the Tigers.
That means no win for Bibee, even though he hardly seemed stressed in throwing 75 pitches and striking out six with one walk. Instead, the win went to Cade Smith, who got four outs in the fifth and sixth innings. Bibee should be back to pitch on four days’ rest in Game 4 if necessary.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #45
Reese Olsen surrendered one run over five innings in relief of opener Tyler Holton in Game 1 against the Guardians.
Unfortunately, that one run came on a three-run homer from Lane Thomas that put the Guardians up 5-0 in the first. Olsen, though, did a great job afterwards, allowing just two more hits and striking out four. The showing might get him a start if the series goes to a fourth game.
  • CLE Catcher #6
David Fry went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and a walk as the Guardians’ designated hitter Saturday against the Tigers.
The Guardians actually went the entire final month of the season without facing a lefty, and Fry’s start today was his first since Sept. 18. He got the nod even though the lefty was only an opener, and fortunately, he remained in after singling off Holton in the first and later had a two-run double off Ty Madden, producing Cleveland’s only runs after the first inning. The Guardians did pinch-hit for him in the eighth, but that was mostly about letting Kyle Manzardo get his feet wet. Fry will almost surely get another start over Manzardo on Monday against Tarik Skubal.
  • DET Shortstop #27
Trey Sweeney went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against the Guardians in Game 1 on Saturday.
Sweeney has opened the postseason 1-for-10 after finishing the regular season 1-for-17 in his final five games. The Tigers don’t really have anyone else they want to use at shortstop, but they could try for more offense by putting Zach McKinstry there and using Matt Vierling at third and Wenceel Pérez in the outfield. McKinstry’s just as cold as Sweeney, though.
