Anthony Alford has elected free agency.
Alford has refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis and will test the free agent waters instead. The 27-year-old outfielder missed the opening two weeks of the season with a sprained right wrist and appeared in just a pair of games before being designated for assignment last week. He should be able to latch on somewhere as extra outfield depth, but may have to settle for a minor league contract.

Athletics optioned INF CJ Alexander to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Alexander earns a trip back to the minors after going 3-for-17 with eight strikeouts over six games in his Athletics debut. The 28-year-old infielder has hit .160 (4-for-25) with zero extra-base hits across 10 games in the majors over the last two seasons.
Cowser, Mayo hit ground running with Orioles
Colton Coswer and Coby Mayo are recent callups for the Orioles who could make waves if early returns are any indication.
  • CHC Left Fielder #30
Kyle Tucker (finger) remains absent from the lineup for the second straight game on Wednesday against the Nationals.
The Cubs are trying to give Tucker some extra time off for the swelling to subside after injuring his right ring finger over the weekend on a stolen-base attempt. Fortunately, initial X-rays came back negative for any fractures and the 28-year-old fantasy superstar figures to return to Chicago’s lineup at some point this week. He remains day-to-day for now. It’ll be Seiya Suzuki in right field and Justin Turner at DH on Wednesday night for the second straight game.
  • DET Center Fielder #22
Parker Meadows is not in the lineup for Wednesday’s showdown against the White Sox.
Meadows takes a seat after 2-for-8 with a pair of extra-base hits and one steal in two games since returning earlier this week from a two-month absence to open the year due to a nerve-related issue in his upper-right arm. The 25-year-old outfielder showed some really promising signs late last year when he made a midseason swing adjustment at Triple-A Toledo that helped unlock his power/speed combo potential. He should be rostered in all fantasy formats, even if he’s going to cede the occasional start to someone like Javier Báez, who is in center field on Wednesday night, a couple times per-week.
  • BAL Catcher #99
Gary Sánchez (wrist) and Ramón Laureano (ankle) will begin minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday with Triple-A Norfolk.
Sánchez and Laureano are both aiming to return to Baltimore’s lineup by the end of the week. The pair have occupied reserve roles on the Orioles bench this season and are unlikely to make an impact for fantasy purposes.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #3
Ceddanne Rafaela hit a 308-foot homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Red Sox an 11-9 win over the Angels on Wednesday.
There’s only one spot in one major league ballpark where one can hit a 308-foot homer, but Rafaela found it, dropping one just to the left of the Pesky Pole down the right field line at Fenway. Right fielder Matthew Lugo wouldn’t have caught it anyway, and with Abraham Toro on first, it probably would have been a game-ending double had it fallen in play. It was Rafaela’s lone hit in five at-bats today, but it was his fourth homer in his last seven games. He hit just two in his first 52 games.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #54
Lucas Giolito was lit up for seven runs in 1 2/3 innings by the Angels on Wednesday.
Giolito’s 43 pitches today produced nine hard-hit balls and one missed swing. There just isn’t anything here to be encouraged about. In his best years, Giolito struck out over 32 percent of the batters he faced in 2019 and 2020. That was down to 25-26 percent while he was finishing with ERAs in the high-4.00s in 2022 and ’23. Right now, he’s at 18 percent with his current 6.42 ERA. Given that he’s never been very good about limiting homers or walks, there’s no way he’s going to succeed while missing so few bats, and while there’s hope his slider and changeup will get a little better with more reps, he’s probably not regaining any additional velocity, since he’s already back to where he was in the two seasons before he got hurt. The Red Sox won’t move on yet, but they might benefit from doing so. Giolito is due to make his next start against the Rays.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #59
José Soriano yielded seven runs in 3 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Soriano’s ERA was a nice 3.41 coming into this one, but his WHIP was already a killer and giving up eight hits and three walks won’t help. In fact, at 1.59, he’s now second worst in the league in that category, putting him right in between teammates Yusei Kikuchi and Jack Kochanowicz. Soriano, an extreme groundball pitcher, has probably been somewhat unlucky to amass a .339 BABIP and give up 78 hits in 72 1/3 innings. However, he has no one to blame but himself for the 37 walks. He really ought to be better than this. Soriano will face the A’s next week.
  • BOS Right Fielder #52
Wilyer Abreu was lifted for a pinch-hitter after going 2-for-2 with a sac fly and two RBI against the Angels on Wednesday.
The Red Sox still refuse to show any faith in Abreu against lefties, and it’s taking a toll on his fantasy value. He didn’t start against southpaws Monday or Tuesday, so he was limited to a total of six plate appearances in the series against the Angels.
  • LAA Shortstop #9
Zach Neto tripled, doubled and scored twice Wednesday against the Red Sxo.
Both hits came while the Angels were racking up seven runs in the first two innings. At that point, it looked like Neto had a legit chance for a cycle. However, he grounded out and struck out twice in his remaining at-bats. Still, Neto had a nice series against Boston, going 5-for-15 with a homer and five runs scored.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #66
Tigers activated RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long from the 60-day injured list.
Gipson-Long will make his return to Detroit’s rotation for the first time since the late stages of the 2023 campaign, after missing all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, with a tasty matchup on Wednesday night against the rebuilding White Sox. The soft-tossing 27-year-old righty has shown plenty of strikeout potential at the highest level and represents a worthwhile speculative pickup for fantasy managers, especially in deeper mixed leagues.
