Former major-league outfielder Jeremy Giambi passed away Wednesday at the age of 47, according to his agent Joel Wolfe.
The younger brother of Jason Giambi played six seasons in the majors, including stints with the Royals, Athletics, Phillies and Red Sox from 1998 until 2003. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, no cause of death has been confirmed. He reportedly passed away at his parent’s home in Southern California. Rest in peace, Jeremy. Our thoughts are with the Giambi family at this time.

Willson Contreras was scratched from the Cardinals’ starting lineup on Friday night due to back spasms.
The Cardinals are calling his removal from the lineup “precautionary”. Alec Burleson will shift over to first base while Nolan Gorman enters the lineup to play second base and will bat seventh against Zac Gallen and the Diamondbacks on Friday evening. Look for the Cardinals to provide an update on his status and a potential timeline for his return after the game.
Top prospect Clarke to be called up by Athletics
Following the Atheltics' announcement that they are calling up prized outfield Denzel Clarke, James Schiano discusses what the toolsy prospect with "blazing speed" will bring to the pro level.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #30
Jake Diekman announced his retirement from professional baseball on Friday.
The 38-year-old southpaw was released by the Braves during the final stages of spring training once it became clear that he wouldn’t crack the team’s Opening Day bullpen. Diekman pitched for nine teams in his big league career (Phillies, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Royals, Athletics, Red Sox, White Sox, Rays and Mets), compiling a 3.91 ERA, 1.396 WHIP and a 764/358 K/BB ratio over 602 1/3 innings. He notched 27 victories and accumulated 19 saves. We wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his life.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman #5
Bryson Stott is absent from the Phillies’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Athletics.
It looks like a routine night off for the 27-year-old second baseman with left-hander Jacob Lopez toeing the slab for the A’s. Edmundo Sosa will draw a start at second base and will bat seventh for the Phillies on Friday evening in West Sacramento.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #54
The second game of Friday’s scheduled doubleheader between the Orioles and Red Sox was postponed due to inclement weather.
Once again, the two sides will attempt to make up the game as part of a split doubleheader in Boston on Saturday. Expect Lucas Giolito, who was scheduled to start on Friday night, to pitch in one of Saturday’s contests.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #41
Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) will visit the doctor for a follow-up appointment next week and could be cleared to begin playing catch.
The 25-year-old right-hander has been shelved since early April when he suffered a fractured right thumb after being struck by a line drive. The initial expectation was that he could return in six weeks, but that was six and a half weeks ago and he hasn’t even started throwing the ball yet. Even if he avoids any setbacks, it would be surprising to see him return before the end of June.
  • KC Catcher #13
Salvador Perez was scratched from the Royals’ starting lineup on Friday due to illness.
The 35-year-old backstop was feeling a bit under the weather on Friday night so the Royals ultimately made the decision to pull him from the lineup and give him an evening off to rest. Freddy Fermin will start behind the dish for the Royals and will bat seventh for the Royals against Pablo Lopez and the Twins.
  • BAL Outfield
Orioles’ outfield prospect Dylan Beavers landed on the injured list at Triple-A Norfolk after suffering a right shoulder AC sprain.
The 23-year-old outfielder sustained the injury as he crashed into the outfield wall during batting practice on Thursday. No word yet on how long the O’s expect him to be sidelined for, but he’s going to miss a few weeks at a minimum.
  • DET Catcher #0
Tigers sent C Tomás Nido outright to Triple-A Toledo.
The 31-year-old backstop passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment on Tuesday and will continue to function as extra catching depth for the Tigers at the Triple-A level. Nido hit .343 (12-for-35) with two RBI during his time with the big league club.
  • ATL Right Fielder #13
Braves’ manager Brian Snitker told reporters on Friday that Ronald Acuña Jr. will start in right field on Friday and Saturday and then may get a day off to rest on Sunday as they ease him back into action.
Snitker also said that on days that Acuña isn’t in the lineup he will be available to hit, but then he’ll likely be pinch run for if he gets on base. Eventually, Snitker noted that they’ll leave it up to the 27-year-old superstar to let them know when he needs to rest. Even if he only plays in two games over the weekend, fantasy managers are going to want to get Acuña in lineups for his season debut on Friday night.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #31
Tyler Glasnow (shoulder) threw a bullpen session in Los Angeles on Friday without any issues.
Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts noted that Glasnow threw fewer than 20 pitches during the session but that the right-hander “felt great afterwards”. He’s still obviously a long way away from a potential return, but it’s nice to hear that he’s at least taking strides in the right direction.
