The Padres have hired Francisco Cervelli as their new catching instructor, reports Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
He’ll replace Rod Barajas, who has been a part of the Padres’ coaching staff since October of 2018. Cervelli announced his retirement last fall after a 13-year playing career.

Lawrence Butler went 2-for-4 while scoring three runs and picking up an RBI against the Giants on Friday.
Butler, 24, singled twice and also drew a walk. He finished June with a slash of .234/.311/.402 with three homers and four stolen bases, so it’s nice to see some success from a player that was one of the biggest fantasy steals in baseball in 2024.
Hold Muncy if placed on injured list
Eric Samulski advises fantasy managers to "hold" Max Muncy if placed on the injured list, who has produced in a big way since the beginning of May, and discusses the outlook for Dodgers' call-up Esteury Ruiz.
  • ATH 1st Baseman #16
Nick Kurtz hit a two-run homer to help the Athletics trounce the Giants on Friday.
Kurtz did commit a pair of errors, giving him four on the season. Those only matter in terms of determining whether or not he’s a future designated hitter (note: probably), but what matters for fantasy players is that Kurtz has homered 13 times in 50 games, and should be a consistent source of power for the remainder of 2025.
  • ATH Center Fielder #1
Denzel Clarke homered and tripled in the Athletics’ 11-2 win over the Giants on Friday.
Clarke showed off his speed with his first three-bagger of the season, and showed off some pop with a 417-foot homer in the seventh. Even with the strong game he’s slashing an guy .200/.248/.318, but there are some flashes that suggest he can be a fantasy-relevant player in the future.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #38
JP Sears gave up just three hits over six scoreless frames to pick up a win Friday against the Giants.
This makes back-to-back outings that Sears hasn’t allowed runs, and it’s helped the 29-year-old lower his ERA to 4.76 from the 5.44 mark it was prior to those two starts. That’s still a less-than-ideal number, but, better. It’s still hard to trust Sears as a fantasy pitcher because of his lack of swing-and-miss ability — although he did fan six during Friday’s win — and he’s a risky option for his next scheduled bout against Atlanta next week.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #35
Justin Verlander was tagged for six runs in three innings of work to pick up a loss to the Athletics on Friday.
There have been starts where Verlander has deserved his first victory as a member of the Giants. This was not one of them. He did strike out five, but they came while allowing seven hits while the A’s were able to pick up all five runs off the future Hall of Famer in the first two innings. He’s now 0-6 on the season, and his ERA of 4.84 indicates he’s far from blameless. His next chance for that first win in San Francisco colors comes Wednesday against the Phillies. Weirder things have happened.
  • ARI 3rd Baseman #28
Eugenio Suárez drove in two runs while hitting a solo homer in a loss to the Royals on Friday.
The homer meant nothing to the scoreboard, but did improve his total to 28 on the season. That solo shot and a sac fly earlier in the contest also brings his RBI total to 74; tying him with Cal Raleigh for the MLB lead.
  • KC Shortstop #7
Botty Witt Jr. picked up three hits while driving in a run against the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Witt Jr. is starting to see the hits fall in again. The three-hit effort sees his average rise to .293 after it was down to .277 following the previous weekend’s series against the Dodgers. He’s picked up multiple hits in three of his four games this July, and outside of a shaky run in May he’s been an elite fantasy option. Again.
  • KC 1st Baseman #9
Vinnie Pasquantino homered twice and drove in six runs to help the Royals to a 9-3 rout of the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Pasquantino helps the Royals win back-to-back games for the first time since June 19-20. The first baseman hit both of his homers off a wholly ineffective Eduardo Rodriguez; a three-run shot in the first followed by a two-run roundtripper in the fourth. Pasquantino has now homered 14 times in the first-half of 2024 wit an OPS of .774. Far from elite numbers, but solid all things considered.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #57
Eduardo Rodriguez was shellacked for 12 hits and nine runs — eight earned — over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Royals on Friday.
Rodriguez somehow struck out seven, but when the ball was put in play, bad things happened. That’s particularly true when he was facing Vinnie Pasquantino, as Pasquantino homered twice off the southpaw while Mark Canha also added a roundtripper. Rodriguez has been up-and-down for the majority of 2025, and this one definitely goes in the latter pile. His chance to bounce back is scheduled for Wednesday against the Padres.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #50
Kris Bubic allowed three runs over seven innings to get a win over the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Bubic gave up a pair of runs in the first inning, but settled down nicely after; allowing just a solo homer to Eugenio Suárez over the next five frames. The 27-year-old has been outstanding in 2025 with a (deserved) 7-3 record and 2.56 ERA, and six strikeouts against three walks sees his K/BB ratio sit at 113/35 over 110 innings. His final start of the first half before a possible trip to the All-Star game is scheduled for Wednesday versus the Pirates.
