Felix Hernandez (elbow) is scheduled to throw a side session on Wednesday.
Hernandez left his outing one week ago with a sore pitching elbow, but he didn’t require an MRI and is said to be feeling better now. The Orioles haven’t ruled him out for the start of the season, but there’s also the matter of whether he’ll even make the team. His showing during Grapefruit League action suggests that might not be the best idea.

  • MIN Right Fielder #38

Matt Wallner hit two homers in the first game of his Triple-A rehab assignment on Thursday.
Wallner has been out since Apr. 15 with a strained hamstring, but he’ll be back soon to serve as the Twins’ right fielder against right-handers. That seems like bad news for Carson McCusker, who has had only two at-bats since being called up on Sunday.
Williams has 'taken off' for Guardians
Eric Samulski breaks down Gavin Williams' recent stretch of strong starts, explaining why the Cleveland Guardians pitcher needs to be picked up in all fantasy baseball leagues.
  • BAL Catcher #72
Samuel Basallo had two homers, a double and a walk for Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.
Basallo missed time last month with a hamstring strain and got off to a slow start after returning, but he’s hitting .291/.400/.709 with six homers in 65 plate appearances this month. Carving out a role for him in Baltimore would probably mean giving up on Ryan Mountcastle, but it’s something the Orioles could consider as they continue to flounder.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #15
Matt Manning retired all four batters he faced, striking out three, in relief for Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.
Manning has been successful since the Tigers moved him to the pen a few weeks ago, allowing two earned runs in nine innings. Unfortunately, he’s still walked seven during that span, and he’s yet to see a velocity boost in his shorter outings. He’ll probably get a look in the majors at some point, but he’s not showing closer potential right now.
  • Christian Franklin went 4-for-6 with five RBI for Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.
Franklin’s six at-bats produced five-hard hit balls ranging from 99.5 mph to 111.2 mph. The Cubs’ 2021 fourth-round pick isn’t really known for his power, but the strength is obviously there, and he’s been a little better at lifting the ball this year, with his groundball rate falling from 60% in Double-A last season to 49% in Triple-A. He’s currently hitting .255/.393/.394, and with his ability to play all three outfield spots, he’s tracking as a potentially useful fourth outfielder.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #80
Richard Fitts tossed three scoreless innings in his first rehab outing with Double-A Portland on Thursday.
Fitts has been on the IL since suffering a pectoral strain on Apr. 12. He’ll make at least one and probably two more rehab starts before the Red Sox consider returning him to their rotation.
  • COL Relief Pitcher #38
Victor Vodnik began a rehab assignment Thursday by giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning for Double-A Hartford.
Vodnik has missed five weeks with shoulder inflammation. He figures to make at least one or two more minor league appearances before rejoining the Rockies bullpen.
  • HOU Center Fielder #4
Pedro León, out since the spring with a hamstring strain, homered for the FCL Astros on Thursday.
It was his first game action of the year. León will most likely be optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land once his rehab assignment is complete.
  • BAL Left Fielder #17
Colton Cowser went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Thursday in the first game of his rehab assignment with High-A Aberdeen.
Cowser figures to rehab through the weekend before rejoining the Orioles at some point during next week. Either Dylan Carlson or Heston Kjerstad figures to go down to make room for him.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #25
Rhett Lowder departed his rehab start in the second inning Thursday with an apparent side injury.
Lowder tossed a scoreless first before getting hurt on the first pitch of the second inning. The top prospect has been on the IL since the beginning of the season with elbow soreness.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #36
Logan Gilbert (elbow) is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Friday in Houston.
Fellow rehabbing rotation-mate Bryce Miller (shoulder) will join him in the session as well. The M’s rotation got a boost on Thursday as George Kirby made his season debut and it sounds like more reinforcements should be on the way soon. Barring any setbacks, it looks like Gilbert is on track to return at some point in early June.
