Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde said Friday that while Felix Hernandez (elbow) is feeling better, he will not make his next scheduled Grapefruit League start.
The 34-year-old hurler is in camp as a non-roster invitee, but this elbow injury may have spoiled any hopes that he had of cracking the Opening Day starting rotation. In three Grapefruit League appearances, Hernandez registered a 7.94 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 5/2 K/BB ratio over 5 2/3 innings. The King’s days of fantasy relevancy are long gone.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Double-A Somerset.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Chisholm, who is working his way back from an oblique strain, will play third base at the outset of his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old figures to be ready to rejoin New York’s lineup at some point next week.
Vest emerging as Tigers closer going forward
Eric Samulski dives into the closer-by-committee situation with the Detroit Tigers, sharing why Will Vest is likely the "primary option" after picking up his seventh save of the season.
  • MIA Catcher #50
Agustin Ramírez tallied a career-high four hits, including his seventh home run of the season, propelling the Marlins to a 10-8 victory over the Padres.
Ramírez put together the strongest performance of his rookie campaign out of the leadoff spot during Wednesday afternoon’s back-and-forth slugfest at Petco Park, finishing 4-for-5 with four RBI. The 23-year-old catcher took Padres starter Kyle Hart deep for a solo shot in the fourth inning – his seventh big fly of the year – before adding a pair of run-scoring singles later in the contest. He’s off to a phenomenal start at the dish, hitting .262/.318/.525 with 17 runs scored, seven homers, 17 RBI and one steal through 31 games.
  • SD 1st Baseman #30
Gavin Sheets went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI on Wednesday in a loss to the Marlins.
Sheets has been one of the real bright spots this season for San Diego as he connected for his 11th round-tripper of the season during the seventh inning of Wednesday’s shootout at Petco Park. The 29-year-old slugger has gone deep five times in his last seven games. It turns out a change of scenery, getting away from the White Sox’ ongoing quagmire, was just what he needed to turn things around.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #53
Calvin Faucher fired a scoreless ninth inning on Wednesday against the Padres to record his third save of the season.
This one had to feel extra special for Faucher, who grew up in nearby Chula Vista and went to UC-Irvine. The local product was tasked with protecting a two-run lead at Petco Park and needed just eight pitches (five strikes) to slam the door. He got the call after breakout star Ronny Henriquez served up a go-ahead homer to Gavin Sheets with two outs in the seventh inning, but came back out to hurl a scoreless eighth inning.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #22
Sandy Alcantara was charged with six runs over four innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Padres.
It’s simply not happening. Alcantara’s struggles continued Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park as he surrendered seven hits and allowed at least four earned runs for the sixth consecutive start since April 29. He threw just 44 of 71 pitches for strikes, walking four batters in the process, and failed to record a strikeout for the first time since April 6, 2019. The fastball velocity continues to be there for Alcantara in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he somehow managed to generate only one swinging strike in this contest, which seems almost impossible. He’ll square off against the Rockies on Tuesday in his next start, but there’s zero reason fantasy managers should trust him given his recent performance.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #68
Kyle Hart was lit up for five runs over 4 2/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Not great. Hart was staked to a five-run lead by the fourth inning of Wednesday afternoon’s spot start and was unable to hold onto it for very long. He gave up six hits, including a pair of home runs, and only managed one strikeout. The -year-old lefty holds an inflated 6.66 ERA across 25 2/3 innings (six starts) this season in his stateside return. He’ll presumably be shipped back to Triple-A El Paso ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Pirates.
  • WSH Relief Pitcher #67
Kyle Finnegan is available to pitch Wednesday after missing time with shoulder fatigue.
Finnegan should close tonight if a save situation arises. He last pitched Thursday, when he gave up an unearned run to take a blown save against the Braves.
  • COL Shortstop #11
Rockies re-signed INF Owen Miller to a minor league contract.
Miller opted for free agency after being outright by the Rockies last week, but he’s rejoining the club’s Triple-A affiliate now. That’s where he opened the season before he was called up in late April. He went 2-for-14 in nine games for the Rockies before being DFA’d.
  • FA Right Fielder #16
    Royals released OF Hunter Renfroe.
Renfroe was always going to clear waivers after being DFA’d by the Royals, but there are some outfield needy teams (the Padres?) who might be willing to take a chance on him. The 33-year-old was hitting .182/.241/.242 in 108 plate appearances before being cut.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #30
Paul Skenes fanned seven over 6 2/3 scoreless frames in the Pirates’ 10-1 defeat of the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Skenes allowed four hits and walked none in the 96-pitch outing. It’s his first win since Apr. 25, even though he came into the day having allowed a total of three runs over 20 innings in his previous three starts. He’s sporting a 2.15 ERA, a 77/18 K/BB ratio and a 4-5 record after 12 starts. He’ll face the Astros next.
