Dustin Pedroia has announced his retirement after a 14-year career.
Pedroia will be paid in full ($12.125 million) for the final season of his contract. “Dustin came to represent the kind of grit, passion, and competitive drive that resonates with baseball fans everywhere and especially with Red Sox fans,” Red Sox owner John Henry said in a statement. Pedroia missed the entire 2020 campaign due to a knee injury and has appeared in just nine games total since the end of the 2017 season, so it was obvious this day was coming soon, but it’s sad that he didn’t get to go out on his own terms. Still, he had a heck of a career, amassing a .299/.365/.439 batting line with 1,805 hits, 140 homers, and 725 RBI over 1,512 regular season games. In addition to getting three World Series rings, he won the AL Rookie of the Year Award (2007), the AL MVP (2008), and four Gold Glove Awards while being selected to four All-Star teams. He’ll always be remembered fondly by Red Sox fans and he should make for an interesting Hall of Fame case. Hats off, Dustin.

John Gambadoro of 98.7 reports that the Diamondbacks and Ketel Marte are working on a long-term extension.
Marte is currently locked up through 2028, but considering how good he’s been for the overwhelming majority of his career and that he’s still only 31, it’s no surprise that Arizona would like to keep him in town for longer than that. Don’t be surprised if this is a deal that is announced relatively soon.
  • TEX Third Baseman #8
Josh Smith doubled in Joc Pederson in the fourth to plate the only run in the Rangers’ 1-0 victory against the Reds on Wednesday.
The game featured all of six hits and two walks and was played in 2:13. The Rangers improved to 5-2 on the season, even though they’ve hit .192 and been outscored 25-18 in their seven games.
  • TEX Relief Pitcher #77
Luke Jackson earned his third save with a scoreless ninth Wednesday against the Reds.
Jacob Webb, Robert Garcia, Chris Martin and Jackson all turned in rather easy scoreless innings after Jack Leiter departed due to a blister. The Reds did Jackson a little favor when Jake Fraley was picked off/caught stealing to end the eighth, leaving the ninth spot up in the order to begin the ninth. Pinch-hitter Jacob Hurtubise went on to ground out on the first pitch he saw. No. 3 hitter Elly De La Cruz did get up with two outs anyway, thanks to a TJ Friedl single, but he grounded out to end it.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #21
Despite limiting the Rangers to one run and three hits in seven innings, Hunter Greene took a loss Wednesday.
Greene struck out eight for a second straight start. He got a whopping 22 missed swings today, which is tied for the highest total by a pitcher this season. His 59 fastballs averaged 100.0 mph, and he topped out at 101.5 mph. Alas, the Reds offense couldn’t score even a single run for him in this one. Greene will take an 0-1 record and a 2.25 ERA into his third outing against the Giants.
  • PHI Shortstop #7
Trea Turner (back) is in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Rockies.
Turner will be making his first start since Opening Day after dealing with back spasms. The 31-year-old should be in lineups for Wednesday’s tilt against Kyle Freeland and the Rockies.
  • NYM Second Baseman #0
Mets signed INF Niko Goodrum to a minor league contract.
Goodrum opted out of his minor league deal with the Padres at the end of the Cactus League. The 33-year-old will need to be added to the 40-man roster to play for the Mets in 2025. There’s a pretty good chance that doesn’t happen.
  • NYM First Baseman #28
Mets signed 1B Jon Singleton to a minor league contract.
The Mets also signed Niko Goodrum to a minor league deal Wednesday, so Triple-A Syracuse gets a glow up. Singleton was released by the Astros before the start of the season, and isn’t likely to be a player that gets much playing time with the Mets unless Pete Alonso was to miss time. Even still there’s no guarantee.
  • MIL Catcher #76
Brewers C prospect Jeferson Quero is dealing with a hamstring issue.
Quero is currently in Arizona rehabbing the shoulder injury that caused him to miss most of the 2024 season. The 22-year-old backstop will remain at the complex in Maryville, and the hope is he’ll be able to head to Triple-A Nashville in the coming weeks. Quero is one of the best catching prospects in baseball.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #47
Frankie Montas (lat) has begun a throwing program.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Montas has begun throwing from 60 feet away. The right-hander will likely need a few bullpens and multiple rehab appearances before he’ll be ready to rejoin the Mets’ rotation at some point late in the spring, and that’s assuming no setbacks.
  • BAL Second Baseman #7
Jackson Holliday is not in the starting lineup against the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Holliday will take a seat for the first time in 2025 against left-hander Garrett Crochet. That means Jordan Westburg will handle duties at second base with Ramon Urias getting a start at the hot corner.
