Manny Ramirez has signed a contract with the Sydney Blue Sox of the Australian Baseball League.
Fun. Ramirez, now 48, was recently linked to signing with a Chinese Professional Baseball League Team this summer, but it never came to fruition. The last time the slugger played professionally was a 2014 stint with Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs’ organization. One of the best right-handed hitters of the generation, Ramirez has hit 555 homers in 2,302 career games with a slash of .312/.411/.585.

Coby Mayo was scratched from the lineup at Triple-A Norfolk on Friday night and is on his way to join the Orioles in Baltimore.
The 23-year-old top prospect is either being summoned as an insurance policy in case Ryan Mountcastle has to go on the injured list after leaving Friday’s game with a hamstring injury, or the O’s already know that Mountcastle is going to miss some time and they need Mayo there as soon as possible. We’ll know more before Saturday’s game, but it sounds like it could be the latter.
Palencia 'asserts himself' as Cubs closer
Daniel Palencia has four saves in his last four appearances, and James Schiano examines how the 25-year-old flamethrower has officially asserted himself as the Chicago Cubs closer moving forward.

Rockies signed RHP Nick Anderson to a minor league contract.
The 34-year-old right-hander exercised an opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the Cardinals and found an opportunity with a much clearer path to the big leagues. Anderson posted a 6.20 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 20/8 K/BB ratio over 20 1/3 innings in 17 appearances at Triple-A Memphis.
  • WSH Left Fielder #30
Nationals’ manager Dave Martinez told reporters on Friday that Jacob Young (shoulder) is nearing a minor league rehab assignment.
He’ll continue his current progression while the team finishes up their current road trip, and if all goes well Young will be sent out on a minor league rehab assignment when the Nationals return home next week. The 25-year-old outfielder has been shelved since May 20 due to a left shoulder AC sprain.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #38
Alex Cobb (hip) pitched well in his first minor league rehab start at High-A West Michigan on Friday night, allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings.
The right-hander recorded three strikeouts on the evening and didn’t walk a batter. Cobb threw 24 pitches in the game, 16 of those for strikes. His fastball averaged around 93 mph and was well-located throughout his start. He didn’t pitch at all during spring training, so it’s going to be a lengthy build up before he’s an option to join the Tigers’ rotation.
  • FA Center Fielder #1
    Rangers released OF Kevin Pillar.
The 36-year-old outfielder had been designated for assignment on Sunday and passed through waivers unclaimed. Pillar appeared in 20 games with the Rangers, slashing just .209/.209/.256 with zero homers, one RBI and an 8/0 K/BB ratio across his 43 plate appearances. He could be of interest for team’s that need a strong defensive outfielder and pinch runner for their playoff push.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #17
Rangers skipper Bruce Bochy told reporters on Friday evening that Nathan Eovaldi (triceps) will have his next start pushed back a few days.
Eovaldi left Tuesday’s start against the Blue Jays after only two innings due to right triceps fatigue, so the move certainly makes sense. The Rangers have an off day on Monday, so the rest of their rotation will remain on regular rest until the club decides when and where to slot Eovaldi back in. He had been lined up for two starts next week, now that assignment will go to Tyler Mahle.
  • TEX Right Fielder #53
Adolis García is not in the Rangers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Cardinals.
Rangers’ skipper Bruce Bochy confirmed that García was given the night off to take a mental break and clear his head. The 32-year-old slugger is slashing a woeful .208/.256/.371 with seven homers, 27 RBI, five stolen bases and a 57/11 K/BB ratio over 215 plate appearances on the season. Ezequiel Duran will start in left field for the Rangers on Friday night and will bat ninth against Matthew Liberatore and the Cardinals.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #24
Zach Eflin shut out the White Sox for seven innings and struck out six in the Orioles’ 2-1 victory Friday.
The six strikeouts topped his previous season high by one, and it’s also the first time he’s completed seven innings. The opponent definitely deserves some credit for Eflin’s success today, as he didn’t seem to be doing anything much differently than usual. The win moves him to 4-2 with a 4.46 ERA, and he has another rather favorable outing coming up in Seattle next week.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #74
Félix Bautista picked up his ninth save despite giving up a run in the ninth Friday against the White Sox.
Bautista gave up two doubles and then nearly surrendered a two-run homer to Luis Robert Jr. that went just foul. Robert went on to walk, and Joshua Palacios struck out to end the game. Bautista’s splitter is working well for the most part, but he continues to look more average than dominant in the closer’s role for Baltimore. Odds are that he’ll improve, and no one else is making a run at his job. Things will probably be okay in the end.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #59
Pitching behind an opener, Sean Burke threw six innings of two-run ball Friday against the Orioles.
Burke took over after Jared Shuster worked a scoreless first and could have gone without ever allowing a run if the White Sox had employed some better defense in the sixth inning. He concludes May with a 2.72 ERA over 33 innings, even though his 25/20 K/BB is ugly (it was 19/19 before today). He’ll likely face the Tigers next, though we’ll have to wait and see whether it’s as a starter or a bulk guy.
