  • LAA Starting Pitcher #23

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Monday that Alex Meyer (shoulder) won’t be ready for Opening Day.
Meyer, 29, missed all of last season following labrum surgery and encountered a setback in August which required a cortisone shot. The Angels released him in November before bringing him back on a minor league deal. He’s not expected to begin throwing until February, so it’s just not realistic that he’ll be ready for the start of the season. Meyer showed some interesting flashes with the Angels in 2017 before injuring his shoulder, but it’s tough to know what to expect from him moving forward.

George Kirby will make his season debut Tuesday against the Astros.
Kirby allowed eight runs over 10 innings in his three rehab starts, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep him reserved for his first start back. The good news is that his velocity is right where it should be after this spring’s shoulder issues; he averaged 96.2 mph with his fastball in his Triple-A starts.
Strider needs time to return to fantasy stardom
Eric Samulski searches for positives from Spencer Strider's underwhelming return, explaining why fantasy managers should expect some bumps in the ace's road back to fantasy dominance.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #53
Pirates recalled RHP Mike Burrows from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Everyone not on Bob Nutting’s payroll would prefer to see Bubba Chandler, but that’s not the pick. Burrows will take Carmen Mlodzinski’s spot in the rotation and start on Thursday against the Brewers. The 25-year-old has posted a solid 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 41/11 K/BB ratio in 32 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season.
  • PIT 3rd Baseman #48
Enmanuel Valdez underwent left shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of 2025.
Quite the bummer for Valdez, who was performing well when he hurt his shoulder on a slide into third on Apr. 19. He played through the injury initially, but he went on the IL two weeks ago with shoulder inflammation. The Pirates didn’t announce what today’s surgery discovered. A 26-year-old with a career 86 OPS+ in 156 games, Valdez will probably be bumped from the Pirates roster and made a free agent this winter.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #50
Pirates optioned RHP Carmen Mlodzinski to Triple-A Indianapolis.
This move was rumored earlier in the day and is official now. Mlodzinski posted a 5.67 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in nine starts for the Pirates this season. He had been a solid reliever for them over the last two seasons, so it will be interesting to see if the Pirates move him back to the bullpen in Triple-A. That’s probably his best long-term fit.
  • SEA Relief Pitcher #41
Mariners designated RHP Casey Lawrence for assignment.
Lawrence threw five innings as a bulk reliever on Tuesday night, so the Mariners needed to call up a fresh arm in the bullpen. It’s likely that Lawrence clears waivers and rejoins the Mariners in the minor leagues.
  • SEA Relief Pitcher #49
Mariners recalled RHP Jesse Hahn from Triple-A Tacoma.
Hahn had thrown five shutout innings for Triple-A Tacoma, allowing one hit while striking out five and walking three. He will serve as middle relief for the Mariners.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #37
Jared Jones is set to miss 10-12 months after surgery to repair his UCL on Wednesday.
That suggests it was internal brace surgery, rather than the full Tommy John. The latter would have put him out for at least the first two-thirds of 2026, but now he could return in the first half. Jones, one of the NL’s most promising young pitchers, went 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA as a 22-year-old rookie last season.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #37
Jared Jones (elbow) has opted to undergo season-ending elbow surgery.
Jones reportedly felt discomfort in his elbow late last week when he started throwing at 100 feet. The 23-year-old will undergo surgery on Wednesday, though the specifics aren’t yet known. The Pirates will have a clearer timeline for his recovery after the procedure, but at the very least we know that he’s done for the year.
  • MIN Right Fielder #38
Matt Wallner (hamstring) is starting at designated hitter for Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.
Wallner has been out since April 17 with a hamstring injury, so it’s nice to see him back in the lineup. He will likely play a few games at designated hitter before then moving into the field. Once he can play the outfield for a full game, or perhaps even in back-to-back games, the Twins will start to think about bringing him back into the lineup.
  • TB Shortstop #6
Taylor Walls has been scratched from the Rays’ lineup on Wednesday against the Astros with a groin injury.
Manager Kevin Cash said it’s “a little bit of a sore groin,” but the team is not expecting it “to be an extended thing.” It sounds like Walls could return this weekend. On Wednesday, Jose Caballero will shift back to shortstop with Curtis Mead entering the lineup at third base and batting eighth.
