Pirates acquired RHP Zach Thornton from the Athletics for RHP Chris Resop.
Thornton, a 23rd round pick from the 2010 draft, posted a 4.53 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 53 2/3 innings as a 24-year-old at High-A Stockton in 2012. He’s unlikely to make an impact at the major league level in 2013.

Julio Rodríguez (back) returned to the Mariners’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Astros.
The 24-year-old center fielder was a late scratch from Thursday’s lineup after his back tightened up on him during batting practice, but it sounds like he’s feeling much better after the day off and is right back in there on Friday night. Rodríguez is slashing .231/.309/.415 with nine homers, 28 RBI and five stolen bases through his first 48 games on the season.
Top prospect Clarke to be called up by Athletics
Following the Atheltics' announcement that they are calling up prized outfield Denzel Clarke, James Schiano discusses what the toolsy prospect with "blazing speed" will bring to the pro level.
  • NYM 3rd Baseman #27
Mark Vientos was a late scratch from the Mets’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Dodgers due to abdominal soreness.
Vientos was batting second and starting at third base in the team’s initial lineup before being replaced by Brett Baty. The team is calling his removal from the lineup precautionary and Vientos is considered day-to-day.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #59
Jeffrey Springs will have his start pushed back a day from Friday to Saturday.
The Athletics promoted Jacob Lopez from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday and he’ll get the call to start against the Phillies on Friday night. That means that Gunnar Hoglund will be moved back from Saturday to Sunday as well.
  • ATH Center Fielder #16
Denzel Clarke will start in center field and bat ninth for the Athletics in his MLB debut against the Phillies on Friday night.
The Athletics have made it clear that they want to give Clarke a shot at everyday at-bats in center field and demoted JJ Bleday on Friday to clear the path for him. His defensive prowess makes him a better real-life option than a fantasy contributor, but there’s a chance that he can carve out some mixed league value as well in deeper formats with his speed and bat-to-ball skills.
  • LAD Designated Hitter #17
Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Shohei Ohtani (elbow) will throw his first live bullpen session on Saturday.
There’s still no clear timeline for when the Dodgers anticipate Ohtani returning to the mound, but he’s at least making small strides in that direction. The 30-year-old two-way superstar has been slowly ramping up his bullpen sessions as he recovers from his second Tommy John surgery.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #2
Alex Bregman is not in the Red Sox’ starting lineup for the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader against the Orioles.
Red Sox’ skipper Alex Cora told reporters that Bregman is dealing with some tightness and they aren’t sure whether or not he’ll require a trip to the injured list. Cora noted that they’ll wait and see how he feels on Saturday before making a decision. Fantasy managers should be sure to monitor his situation through the weekend.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #18
Shota Imanaga (hamstring) is expected to throw his first bullpen session on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old southpaw has been progressing nicely in his recovery from a left hamstring strain and is just about ready to get back on the mound for the first time. He’s still several weeks away at a minimum from a potential return to the Cubs’ rotation, but it’s nice to hear that he’s at least moving in the right direction.
  • NYY Center Fielder #35
Cody Bellinger is not in the Yankees’ starting lineup for Friday night’s soiree against the Rockies at Coors Field.
It looks to be just a routine day of rest for the 29-year-old slugger, though fantasy managers would certainly prefer him to be in the lineup in a game at Coors Field against right-hander Tanner Gordon. Ben Rice will serve as the team’s designated hitter and will bat third for the Bombers on Friday evening in Colorado.
  • LAA Center Fielder #7
Jo Adell is not in the Angels’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Marlins.
Adell had started each of the previous four games for the Halos. The Angels haven’t pulled the plug on him yet, but he’s slashing a pitiful .186/.255/.364 with six homers, 20 RBI and a 38/9 K/BB ratio over 141 plate appearances to open the season. Jorge Soler will draw a rare start in right field on Friday evening while Logan O’Hoppe functions as the team’s designated hitter against Sandy Alcantara and the Marlins.
  • COL 1st Baseman #4
Michael Toglia is not in the Rockies’ lineup for the third consecutive game on Friday night against the Yankees.
There haven’t been any rumblings of Toglia dealing with any sort of injury, so perhaps the new coaching staff is working with Toglia to retool his swing and that’s the reason for the extended absence. Either way, he shouldn’t be anywhere near fantasy lineups at the moment. Kyle Farmer will once again start in his place at first base and bat seventh for the Rockies against Clarke Schmidt and the Yankees.
