Rays acquired RHP Matt Buschmann from the Nationals for cash; assigned him to Double-A Montgomery.
Buschmann, 28, has yet to make an appearance in the major leagues and registered a brutal 7.31 ERA across 88 2/3 innings last year at the Triple-A level. It’s not clear what the Rays want with the right-hander.

Diamondbacks selected the contract of RHP Jeff Brigham from Triple-A Reno.
As had been announced on Thursday, Brigham will join the big league bullpen, taking the place of Kevin Ginkel who was demoted to Triple-A Reno on Friday. Brigham had posted a 5.23 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 32/9 K/BB ratio over 20 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. He’ll be utilized in a middle relief role and can be safely ignored for fantasy purposes.
Palencia 'asserts himself' as Cubs closer
Daniel Palencia has four saves in his last four appearances, and James Schiano examines how the 25-year-old flamethrower has officially asserted himself as the Chicago Cubs closer moving forward.
  • LAD Right Fielder #50
Mookie Betts is not in the Dodgers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Yankees.
It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for the superstar shortstop and getting a breather with left-hander Max Fried on the hill isn’t the worst thing that could happen. Miguel Rojas will start in his place at shortstop and will bat ninth for the Dodgers on Friday evening.
  • SD Relief Pitcher #34
Padres’ right-hander Michael King (shoulder) has been diagnosed with a pinched nerve.
The good news is that a second opinion confirmed that he’s not dealing with any sort of structural damage in his shoulder. The bad news is that there’s still no clear timeline on when he may be able to rejoin the Padres’ rotation. He has been taking anti-inflammatories to help with the pinched nerve and there’s a chance that his issue could subside and he could be ready to resume throwing in just a few days. There’s also a chance that it could linger for months. As frustrating as it is, at least it’s not a structural issue that’s going to cost him a major chunk of the 2025 season.
  • LAD Relief Pitcher #38
Kirby Yates (hamstring) threw a bullpen session on Friday.
It’s an encouraging development for the 38-year-old hurler who has been sidelined since mid-May due to a right hamstring strain. The Dodgers haven’t given any word on any sort of timeline for when he may be ready to return, but the fact that he’s back up on a mound again so soon bodes well for his outlook.
  • ARI 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte (illness) returned to the Diamondbacks’ lineup for Friday night’s tilt against the Nationals.
Marte sat out each of the team’s previous two games due to illness. He got an extra day to rest with the off-day on Thursday and is now apparently back and ready to go. He’ll start at second base and bat second for the Diamondbacks against Jake Irvin and the Nationals on Friday evening in Arizona.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #45
Reese Olson (finger) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Kansas City on Saturday.
Olson remains confident that he’ll require only a minimum stint on the injured list and with Jackson Jobe (elbow) sidelined, the Tigers could certainly use the boost to their rotation that Olson’s return would provide. The 25-year-old right-hander has been shelved since May 18 due to inflammation in his right ring finger.
  • DET Center Fielder #22
Parker Meadows (arm) is scheduled to play nine innings in the field in back-to-back games at Triple-A Toledo on Friday and Saturday.
It sounds like that may be the final major hurdle that the dynamic 25-year-old outfielder needs to clear before he’s able to rejoin the Tigers. If all goes well with those two games, it sounds like there’s a chance that he could be activated from the injured list and make his 2025 debut at some point early next week. If he’s hanging around on the waiver wire in any shallow leagues, now would be the time to pounce.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #32
AJ Smith-Shawver has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow and will miss the rest of the season.
We already knew that the news wasn’t going to be good when Smith-Shawver was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Friday and now we get the unfortunate diagnosis. It has yet to be determined whether the 22-year-old hurler will undergo the traditional Tommy John reconstructive surgery or whether he’ll get the internal brace procedure which could speed up his recovery timeline a bit. Either way, he’ll miss the remainder of the 2025 season and a large chunk of the 2026 season as well while recovering.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #55
Bryce Elder will start for the Braves in Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox.
Elder was the most likely candidate to fill in for the injured AJ Smith-Shawver in the Braves’ rotation, so this move makes sense. Instead of joining the rotation next week as anticipated, he’ll arrive a few days early and give everyone else an extra day of rest. If he pitches well, expect Elder to stick around for a while this time. He holds a 4.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 33/13 K/BB ratio over 44 innings in eight starts for the Braves this season.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #38
Tigers transferred RHP Alex Cobb to the 60-day injured list.
The Tigers needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the arrival of Dylan Smith on Friday, so this move made obvious sense. Cobb, 37, has yet to pitch for the Tigers after signing a one-year, $15 million contract over the winter. He’s progressing towards a minor league rehab assignment though and if all goes well he could be an option to help out their rotation before the month of June is through. That’s good news, as they just lost Jackson Jobe (elbow) to the injured list on Friday and could use some reinforcements.
