There was some talk about Aviles as a leadoff hitter in spring training, and he’ll have an opportunity to see regular at-bats there with Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) sidelined. He figures to see an uptick in production if he can hold onto the job. Cody Ross is starting in center field and batting sixth. Darnell McDonald is batting ninth.

Bogaerts plated Jake Cronenworth with a run-scoring double off of AJ Smith-Shawver in the third inning that extended the Padres’ lead to 2-0. He also led off the eighth inning with a walk, swiped second base and raced around to score on a double off the bat of Brandon Lockridge. The 32-year-old infielder is now hitting .273 (3-for-11) with a pair of RBI and two stolen bases to begin the 2025 campaign.

The dynamic 26-year-old outfielder led off the game with a double off of AJ Smith-Shawver and then raced around to score the game’s first run on an RBI double by Manny Machado. He then reached on a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning and swiped second base but was left stranded there. Tatis also led off the seventh inning with a walk and scored on a two-out RBI double by Jackson Merrill. He finished his night off with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning that capped off the scoring. He’s off to a sizzling start to the 2025 campaign, hitting .467 (7-for-15) with a homer, five runs scored, two RBI and three stolen bases.

The 32-year-old superstar was pulled from Saturday’s game after dealing with some cramping in his calf, but it appears to have been only a minor issue. He opened the scoring in Sunday’s game with an RBI double off of AJ Smith-Shawver in the first inning, giving the Padres a lead they would never relinquish. Machado is now off to a 3-for-13 (.231) start with three runs scored, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

Pivetta struck out four opposing hitters on the night and didn’t walk a batter. The only baserunner that he allowed was a leadoff single by Orlando Arcia in the third inning, and he wound up getting erased on a double play. Pivetta got eight swings and misses on 82 pitches on the night, half of them on his fastball, while posting a CSW of 29 percent. He’s not going to be this brilliant every time out, but there’s no reason to expect that the 32-year-old right-hander won’t be a strong weekly contributor in fantasy leagues this season pitching in the spacious confines of Petco Park. His next challenge will come against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday.

As a team, the Braves had just one hit and drew one walk in the ballgame, so Harris wasn’t the only culprit in the poor offensive performance. He’s off to a brutally slow start at the plate this season though, hitting .067 (1-for-15) with zero runs scored, RBI or stolen bases.

The 22-year-old hurler also issued three walks while striking out four on the evening. Despite the parade of baserunners against him, the Padres were only able to scratch out single runs in the first and third innings on run-scoring doubles by Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth. Smith-Shawver got 13 swings and misses on 77 pitches on the evening — 10 of those on his splitter alone — while posting a strong CSW of 32 percent. He’ll look to bounce back and try to get in the win column when he does battle against the Marlins at home on Saturday.

You may not have noticed that Civale left the game due to a hamstring issue as he had surrendered five runs over three innings against the Bombers and could have been pulled due to ineffectiveness. The Brewers are already dealing with a heavily depleted starting rotation, so losing Civale for any length of time would be a crushing blow.

It’s a tough break for the 30-year-old right-hander, as he was brilliant in a long relief outing against the Cardinals on Sunday — allowing just one run on two hits and a pair of walks over 5 1/3 innings. He wasn’t going to be available for the next few days though and the Twins need a fresh arm to supplement their depleted bullpen. Given the $4 million remaining on his salary, it’s unlikely that another team will come calling on waivers, so expect that Dobnak will wind up accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A St. Paul.

Paris homered off Cam Booser to break a 2-2 tie that had been in effect since the first inning. Paris started in center today as a result an injury to Jo Adell. It was his first start anywhere this year, though it’d probably make sense for the Angels to play him at second or short with Zach Neto out.

A 64-pitch quality start. The groundball will be key for keeping Kochanowicz in the majors, but he actually got more outs in the air today. He also struck out four, which is pretty good for him; he fanned a total of 25 batters in 11 starts as a rookie last season. Kochanowicz will face a major league offense in his second start next weekend against the Guardians.
