Twins signed 1B-OF Aaron Bates to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invite. Bates, who turned 28 in March, batted .316/.408/.439 with seven home runs, 37 RBI and an .847 OPS last season with Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox organization. He hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2009 and will likely function as depth at the Triple-A level again in 2012.

Gio Urshela

Athletics’ manager Mark Kotsay told reporters after Thursday’s game that Gio Urshela will be placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

Urshela suffered the injury during Thursday’s battle against the Angels. The A’s already have options on the active roster that can cover the hot corner defensively, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do in terms of a roster move when Urshela is officially placed on the injured list on Friday.

Ronald Acuña Jr. (knee) was scratched from the lineup at Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday with the expectation that the 27-year-old superstar will be joining the Braves to make his 2025 season debut on Friday.

Acuña played a full game in right field for the first time on Wednesday afternoon and it sounds like that was the final hurdle that he had to clear in order to return to the Braves’ lineup. He went 6-for-15 (.400) with a pair of homers, two RBI and seven runs scored over six games on his minor league rehab assignment. Fantasy managers with bi-weekly or daily lineup moves should have no qualms about starting Acuña over the weekend if he is indeed activated on Friday.

Taylor Ward

LAA Right Fielder #3

Taylor Ward went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI as the Angels topped the A’s 10-5 on Thursday.

The Halos were down 5-2 when Ward hit the 426-foot slam in the seventh. It was his sixth career homer in just 34 at-bats and 42 plate appearances with the bases loaded. After struggling for the first five weeks of the season, Ward has hit .318 with eight homers and 24 RBI in his last 16 games.

Tyler Anderson

LAA Starting Pitcher #31

Tyler Anderson walked six and gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings Thursday against the Athletics.

This really should have been worse, considering that Anderson surrendered seven hits and went without a strikeout. It’s the first time this season that Anderson has given up five runs, and it comes five days after he allowed as many as four runs for the first time. Those who grabbed him in mixed leagues should move on before he makes his next start against the Yankees.

Luis Severino

ATH Starting Pitcher #40

Luis Severino pitched six innings of two-run ball against the Angels on Thursday.

Severino left with a 5-2 lead, only to see the A’s give up five runs in the seventh. As a result, he remains stuck on one win for the year. Severino is slated to face the Astros next. He’s faced them three times since the beginning of 2023 and given up 13 earned runs over 15 innings.

Tim Anderson

LAA Shortstop #77

Tim Anderson struck out in both of his at-bats and committed an error before being lifted from Thursday’s game against the A’s.

There wasn’t much reason for the Angels to give Anderson a shot in the first place, and there’s no point for keeping him on the roster now. He’s batting .200/.256/.238 with no homers and a 28/3 K/BB in 87 plate appearances. He has twice as many plate appearances as Kevin Newman, who has also been very bad this season but at least was decent recently. Anderson is nearing three years of being a major liability.

Brent Rooker

ATH Left Fielder #25

Brent Rooker went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk Thursday versus the Angels.

Rooker had as many hits today as in his previous eight games combined (3-for-29), and the homer off Tyler Anderson was his first in 12 days. Of some interest is that his nice game came as a right fielder. He’s hit .429 with three homers in seven games as an outfielder this year, compared to .216 with eight homers in 44 games as a DH. Of course, he spent most of last year as a full-time DH and did just fine, so it might be a coincidence.

Carlos Rodriguez

MIL Starting Pitcher #00

Brewers recalled RHP Carlos Rodriguez from Triple-A Nashville.

The expectation is that the 23-year-old hurler will start one of the games against the Pirates over the weekend, though if Aaron Civale is limited or struggles in his return from the injured list on Thursday night, Rodriguez could provide bulk work in a pinch. Either way, he can be ignored for fantasy purposes as his time with the big league club is likely to be very brief this time around.

Brewers designated RHP Joel Payamps for assignment.

The 31-year-old hurler entered the season as a high-leverage reliever that could challenge for saves at the back end of the Brewers’ bullpen. He then struggled to a horrifying 8.35 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and a 16/6 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings in his 23 appearances. He’s had enough success at the big league level that he should attract interest on waivers.

Easton McGee

MIL Relief Pitcher #50

Brewers optioned RHP Easton McGee to Triple-A Nashville.

McGee was up with the Brewers for a couple of days to add a fresh arm to the bullpen, but with Aaron Civale returning to start on Thursday he was the odd-man out on the pitching side. The 27-year-old hurler threw one perfect inning with a strikeout in his lone appearance with the Brewers. He should get another opportunity in Milwaukee before the summer is through.
