Javier Sanoja went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI on Sunday as the Marlins topped the Angels 3-0 in Los Angeles.
The 22-year-old infielder opened the scoring in the ballgame as he plated Matt Mervis with a sacrifice fly off of Kyle Hendricks in the third inning. Sanoja then smacked a one-out double off of Hendricks in the fifth inning and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Jesús Sánchez. With his two-hit attack, Sanoja is now slashing .252/.287/.336 with one homer, 12 RBI and three stolen bases (in six attempts) over 116 plate appearances on the season.
Top prospect Clarke to be called up by Athletics
Following the Atheltics' announcement that they are calling up prized outfield Denzel Clarke, James Schiano discusses what the toolsy prospect with "blazing speed" will bring to the pro level.
  • MIA Left Fielder #7
Jesús Sánchez went 1-for-4 with an RBI double on Sunday as the Marlins triumphed over the Angels in Los Angeles.
Sánchez laced a run-scoring double into center field off of Kyle Hendricks in the fifth inning, extending the Marlins’ early lead to 3-0. That would be his lone hit in four at-bats on the afternoon. For the season, the 27-year-old outfielder is slashing just .222/.328/.316 with two homers, 13 RBI and five stolen bases across 137 plate appearances since his return from the injured list.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #32
Ronny Henriquez notched his first save of the season on Sunday afternoon, working a scoreless ninth inning to protect a three-run lead against the Angels.
The 24-year-old right-hander looked awfully impressive in doing so, getting Yoan Moncada on a line drive to the shortstop before retiring Taylor Ward and Jorge Soler each on swinging third strikes to end it. Henriquez has registered a stellar 1.78 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 35/13 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings through his first 23 appearances on the season and could be in line for more save chances if he continues to dominate like this.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #27
Edward Cabrera delivered a dominant performance in Sunday afternoon’s victory over the Angels, racking up 10 strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball against the Angels.
The 27-year-old right-hander scattered three hits and two walks on the impressive afternoon. Both of the walks that he issued came to the final two hitters that he faced before turning the ball over to the bullpen in the sixth inning. That was also the only time the Angels put two runners on base against him in the game. Cabrera piled up 18 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the day — 11 of those on his curveball alone — while registering a terrific CSW of 36 percent. He’ll look to replicate this fine effort as he brings a 4.73 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 43/16 K/BB ratio (40 innings) into Saturday’s tilt against the Giants.
  • LAA Catcher #25
Travis d’Arnaud went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk as the Angels were shut out by Edward Cabrera and a host of Marlins’ relievers on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The 36-year-old backstop accounted for the Angels’ only extra-base hit of the ballgame with his two-out ground-rule double off of Cabrera in the second inning. As a team, the Halos were only able to muster three total hits in the pitiful offensive performance. On the season, d’Arnaud is now hitting .200/.263/.314 with one homer and four RBI in his first 76 plate appearances.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #28
Kyle Hendricks logged a quality start in Sunday afternoon’s loss to the Marlins, giving up three runs on seven hits over his six innings of work.
The 35-year-old right-hander punched out five batters on the day and didn’t allow a base on balls. The Marlins never mounted a major rally against him, but scratched out single runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. Hendricks got 11 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the day — six of those on his changeup — while posting a solid CSW of 32 percent. He’ll see if he can further improve upon his unsightly 5.23 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 33/16 K/BB ratio (53 1/3 innings) when he takes on the Guardians in Cleveland on Saturday.
  • ATH Catcher #65
Willie MacIver came through with a go-ahead RBI single off of Matt Strahm in the eighth inning on Sunday, propelling the Athletics to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Phillies.
The 28-year-old backstop was making his big league debut on Sunday and had been 0-for-3 heading into the eighth inning. There, the A’s tied the game on an RBI triple off the bat of Lawrence Butler before MacIver lined an 0-1 cutter from Strahm into center field to give the A’s the lead. MacIver also cut down Johan Rojas attempting to steal second base in the ninth inning to end the ballgame. He isn’t likely to see enough playing time or deliver enough production to make him relevant from a fantasy perspective, but it was still a very memorable debut for MacIver.
  • ATH Shortstop #6
Logan Davidson went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and a run scored on Sunday, as the Athletics rallied to beat the Phillies.
Davidson struck out in his lone plate appearance in his big league debut on Saturday. He then got his first hit out of the way in the first inning on Sunday, smacking a two-run double off of Jesús Luzardo that increased the A’s early advantage to 3-0. That would be the extent of their offense in the game though. Davidson also singled in the third inning and worked a walk in the eighth. He started at first base with Nick Kurtz (hip) sidelined on Sunday and could see increased action there in the coming days.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #19
Mason Miller slammed the door on the Phillies in the ninth inning on Sunday, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a one-run advantage.
Miller had been knocked around in each of his previous two outings and blew a save against the Phillies on Saturday night. He bounced back beautifully in this one though, requiring only 12 pitches (eight strikes) to get the job done. He did surrender a two-out infield single to Alec Bohm, but then pinch-runner Johan Rojas was cut down attempting to steal second base to end the game. On the season, Miller now sports a 5.79 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 36/10 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings on the season while securing 12 saves in his first 14 opportunities.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #53
Gunnar Hoglund wasn’t at his best in a no-decision against the Phillies on Sunday afternoon, surrendering three runs on four hits over his five innings of work.
The rookie right-hander also issued three walks on the afternoon while striking out a pair. The Phillies scratched out a run in the second inning as J.T. Realmuto bounced into a double play with the bases loaded. Trea Turner then delivered an RBI single in the third inning and plated another with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Hoglund got just four whiffs on 92 pitches on the afternoon, posting an underwhelming CSW of only 21 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he carries a 5.13 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 22/9 K/BB ratio (26 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s showdown against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
