Mike O’Connor (elbow) will begin a throwing program with Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.
O’Connor is likely three or four weeks away from being an option for the Nationals.

White Sox agreed to terms with RHP Dan Altavilla on a one-year, $1-million contract.
Altavilla had just opted out of his minor league deal with the White Sox, but now he’s back with the organization and in the majors as a result of Miguel Castro’s unfortunate knee injury. Altavilla, 32, had a 2.49 ERA and an 18/10 K/BB in 21 2/3 innings for Charlotte. He’ll join the late-game mix for the White Sox if he gets off to a good start.
Doval named Giants closer moving forward
Eric Samulski evaluates what to expect from Camilo Doval after the San Francisco Giants named the former National League saves leader their closer moving forward.

White Sox placed RHP Miguel Castro on the 15-day injured list with a patellar tendon tear in his right knee.
Castro is out for the year after slipping on first base while retiring Juan Soto on Wednesday.
  • ATL Left Fielder #28
Braves selected the contract of OF José Azócar.
Azócar opted for free agency Wednesday after the Mets DFA’d him and he cleared waivers. The 29-year-old went 5-for-20 in 12 appearances for the Mets. He’ll take over as the Braves’ fifth outfielder with Stuart Fairchild injured and get the occasional at-bat against a lefty.
  • ATL Left Fielder #17
Braves placed OF Stuart Fairchild on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated pinkie finger.
The lightly used Fairchild was 6-for-33 in 21 appearances for the Braves. Eli White had overtaken him as a platoon option against lefties, so he was going to see even less time now with Ronald Acuña Jr. back.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #46
Braves recalled LHP Dylan Dodd from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Dodd served as the Braves’ 27th man Thursday and got two outs against the Phillies. Since that doesn’t count as a real callup, he was allowed to be put back on to the roster today. Previously a starter, Dodd was moved to the pen this spring and had a 5.00 ERA and a 24/3 K/BB in 18 innings for Gwinnett.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #70
Braves optioned RHP Michael Petersen to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Petersen, who was added to the roster between games yesterday, gave up two runs in an inning during the doubleheader against the Phillies.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #32
Braves transferred RHP AJ Smith-Shawver from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list with a right elbow strain.
The Braves haven’t updated Smith-Shawver’s status yet, but it’s obviously not good that the team is already putting him on the 60-day IL one day after he got hurt. He’ll be eligible to return at the end of July.
  • Left Fielder #67
The Orioles are re-signing Cooper Hummel to a major league deal, according to KPRC2’s Ari Alexander.
Hummel spent one day with the Orioles earlier this week, only to lose his spot because of Adley Rutschman’s injury and the need to have a third catcher on the roster. He’ll reclaim the spot now with Rutschman back, but it should again be a rather brief stay; there’s not going to be room for him once some of the Orioles’ injured players start getting activated.
  • MIA 1st Baseman #36
The Marlins will designate both Matt Mervis and Ronny Simon for assignment, according to Sportsgrid’s Craig Mish.
Both players have options remaining, but it looks like they’re being subtracted from the 40-man anyway. Heriberto Hernandez will probably be taking Mervis’s spot. Simon seemed to be the likely candidate to go when Xavier Edwards was activated from the IL, though it’s not clear if Edwards, who is making the move to second base, is ready just yet.
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #55
Brady House had two hits, including a homer, and two walks for Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.
House is 9-for-21 with two homers and two doubles in his last five games, putting him at .285/.341/.500 for the season. That he’s striking out 27 percent of the time isn’t great, but the Nationals have to be thinking about giving him a look at third base anyway.
