May Catcher Rankings

Daulton Varsho

Daulton Varsho

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Here is the May edition of my rest-of-season position rankings and overall top 300 for 5x5 leagues. As you might have noticed, the weekly Strike Zone is off the menu for load management reasons this year. However, I plan to continue to present monthly rankings updates in this spot.

As always, players are ranked by position and then combined into an overall top 300 list.

  • Daulton Varsho had been oddly lacking in the power department early on, but I can’t see dropping him from the top spot here just yet. He has five steals already, and the guy who hit 27 homers for the Diamondbacks last year should show up at some point.

  • I weighed getting more aggressive with Endy Rodriguez‘s ranking here, as the Pirates’ surprising success should provide extra incentive to give him a shot at some point. Still, he’s not off to a great start in Triple-A (.246/.324/.426) and he’s played just one game at a spot other than catcher. Last year, he started 17 games at second base and 12 in the outfield. This year, his one non-catching appearance has come at first base. That’s not a bad thing overall, but his best path to fantasy value this season is probably at another position.

  • I’ve never been all that high on Matt Thaiss offensively, but there’s some hope of him helping in two-catcher mixed leagues while doing the majority of the catching for the Angels, if it lasts. I would think the team would be very interested in Gary Sanchez after he opted out of his minor league deal with the Giants on Tuesday.
