Pitcher

Wade Miley (vs. Seattle Mariners)

We have another monster total in Colorado tonight, so priorities are probably going to be stuffing in players from that game. The problem is, the players from that game are priced up and it’s going to be difficult to spend a lot of money at pitcher and still come back with big-time hitting tonight. Then I take a glance at the star pitchers on the slate and I’m not particularly impressed. I think there are question marks about all of the top projected guys with high salaries. Then I drift down and see a name like Wade Miley. He’s been extremely solid for his new team this year. His opponent, Seattle, currently has the second lowest team total on the board (3.6) and Miley is significantly cheaper than Lance Lynn, Robbie Ray and Mike Clevinger. I think this selection is more about the overall view of the slate rather than the individual view of the pitcher.

Others to Consider: Robbie Ray, Steven Matz

Trade for Beer and Kay
The MLB trade deadline featured rising players you should keep your eyes on like Taylor Trammell, Seth Beer and Anthony Kay.

Catcher/ First Base

Brandon Belt (vs. Colorado Rockies)

San Francisco is in Colorado tonight with a 6.4 implied team total. That’s a massive number for anybody, much less the offensively starved San Francisco Giants. Colorado is on the other side of that game with a 7.3 implied run total tonight. Bottom line, there should be runs in this game and this should be a big target of your DFS lineups. For the sake of not writing up everybody in this game, I’ll give my favorite play from each side. For San Francisco it’s leadoff hitter Brandon Belt. In my opinion, he’s easily the best hitter in this lineup on a nightly basis. Against right-handers this year he only strikes out 17.9% of the time and he walks 15.2% of the time. Only 14.1% of that contact against right-handed pitching is considered “soft”. That means he hits the ball often and it always has pretty good pace on it. Those are the types of at-bats that find gaps in Coors Field.

Others to Consider: Rhys Hoskins, Jose Abreu

Second Base

Luis Arraez (vs. Kansas City Royals)

Outside of Colorado one of the big numbers that jumps off to me is Minnesota with a hefty 6.8 implied run total against Glenn Sparkman tonight. However, looking up and down this lineup it’s going to be difficult to fit any of these guys in with these big price tags. One position I’m looking at is second base, and I see that we can get a Minnesota guy on our DFS lineup and not break the bank. We are projected to have Luis Arraez in the lineup tonight and he checks in as the cheapest Minnesota Twin on Fanduel and the second-least expensive Minnesota hitter on DraftKings. He’s a quality hitter with a .410 wOBA this year against right-handed pitching to go along with a minuscule 9.2% strikeout rate. It’s a thin position and he saves a little money while getting you exposure to the second highest team total on the board. If Jon Schoop makes the lineup, even better (and cheaper) for us.

Others to Consider: Scooter Gennett, Ryan McMahon

Third Base

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (vs. Baltimore Orioles)

Don’t look now but Vladimir Guerrero Jr is starting to play a home run derby with real major league baseball pitching. He cracked another two home runs last night and that gives him four home runs in the last five games. He has the pedigree and the power to be an elite player in this game, he just needs the experience. He’s got a great matchup tonight against Aaron Brooks of the Baltimore Orioles and I want to be riding that hot streak while it’s in play.

Others to Consider: Pablo Sandoval, Miguel Sano

Shortstop

Elvis Andrus (vs. Detroit Tigers)

The shortstop position tonight is very thin if you can’t get Trevor Story or Francisco Lindor in your lineup. They are the two elite hitters with good matchup, but they come at a massive price tag. So, I will look to save a little money and find a guy like Elvis Andrus, who’s playing on a team tonight with a 6.3 implied run total (4th highest on the slate) and should hit in the heart of the order. The high team total tells you that this is a solid matchup in a small park for Texas, and I think Andrus is as good as any shortstop outside of that top 5 in salary to have a decent game.

Others to Consider: Francisco Lindor, Jonathan Villar

Outfield

David Dahl (vs. San Francisco Giants)

As I stated above, anybody in this San Francisco/Colorado game is in play. The entire Colorado lineup looks great on paper, but they are also super expensive. The one guy I’m going to pick out saves you a little bit of money from the other big bats in this lineup yet checks in with extremely solid production in this split. David Dahl is $3,500 on Fanduel and $5,200 on DraftKings. The price on DraftKings seems outrageous until you realize that he’s the cheapest hitter in the top five of that lineup tonight. The price on Fanduel is reasonable and saves you a significant range of $600-$800 from the other guys around him in this lineup. His .224 ISO this year against right-handed pitching actually is a higher number than Nolan Arenado. His major flaw has been strikeouts, but Colorado is taking on a pitcher, Shaun Anderson, who has an absolutely pathetic 12.8% strikeout rate against left-handed batters this season. In games like this, batters like Dahl are just as likely to be your high-scoring fantasy hitter of the night as anyone else, so why not save a few dollars in the process.

A.J. Pollock (vs. San Diego Padres)

Seems like AJ Pollock has established himself as the leadoff hitter for this Los Angeles Dodgers lineup, at least against left-handed pitching. The numbers this year against left-handers look awfully tantalizing with a .205 ISO, low 14.3% strikeout rate and solid 37.8% hard-hit rate. These numbers are very much in line with what he’s done his entire career against left-handed pitching and now he finds himself at the top of the order for one of the best offenses in all of baseball against a mediocre left-handed pitcher.

Others to Consider: Michael Conforto, Max Kepler
