Former Titans and 49ers TE Delanie Walker announced his retirement after 14 NFL seasons.
Walker played seven seasons with the Niners and seven years in Tennessee, where he became one of the more reliable fantasy tight ends. Walker, in fact, led all tight ends in receptions from 2013 to 2017 as a primary pass cacher for the Titans. His career year came in 2015, when he went for 1,088 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 94 receptions. Walker last played in the NFL in 2019.

  • FA Tight End #82
Free agent Delanie Walker expects to sign with a team before training camp.
Walker wants to play for a “contender,” but is open to all options. After skipping 2020 due to COVID, Walker spent his year off recovering from the ankle injury that limited him to eight games his last two seasons. Walker, 35, worked out for the 49ers in June. A return to the Titans, who have Anthony Firkser and Geoff Swain as their top tight ends, could make sense for both sides.

  • FA Tight End #82
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports free agent TE Delanie Walker will work out for the 49ers on Wednesday.
Walker took the 2020 season off due to COVID concerns and will be 37 years old by the time he takes the field for San Francisco should they sign him. He was only healthy for eight games in his final two seasons with the Titans. Walker is facing an uphill battle to return from football but if he can regain his form from the start of his tenure in Tennessee, he’ll be a valuable addition for the 49ers. He recorded four consecutive 800-yard seasons from 2014 to 2017. Walker would back up George Kittle but could also see a modest amount of work in 2TE sets.

Free agent TE Delanie Walker wants to play in 2021.
Walker, 36 in August, took last season off due to COVID and to get back to full health after missing 24-of-32 games the previous two years thanks to injuries. Last offseason, he drew lukewarm interest from the Patriots, Colts, Packers, and Washington. It’s unclear just how much left he has to offer.

  • FA Tight End #82
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Patriots have interest in free agent Delanie Walker.
Walker has been training for the season and expects to sign with a team. The Patriots lost Matt LaCosse to an opt out, leaving a potential roster spot for him. Walker is 35 and rarely healthy but he’s productive when on the field. The Redskins and Packers have also been linked to Walker.

  • FA Tight End #81
The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reports the 49ers have spoken with free agent tight ends Jordan Reed and Delanie Walker.
The 49ers have kept their eye on veteran tight ends this offseason and that included Austin Hooper early in free agency. With Hooper signed to the largest tight end contract in the league, San Francisco has turned their attention to Reed and Walker, two players who have recently missed a lot of time with injuries. George Kittle will be 90% snap player and an early second-round fantasy pick even if the 49ers land a veteran like the ones mentioned here.

  • FA Tight End #82
ESPN’s John Keim reports the Redskins, Colts, and Packers have interest in free agent TE Delanie Walker.
It’s unclear how much interest each team has, but Walker should get low-end starter money as a savvy veteran. The issue, of course, is his age (35) and his recent injury history. Over the last two seasons, Walker has only suited up for eight games. Then again, that does make him a perfect fit to replace Jordan Reed in Washington.
  • FA Tight End #82
    Titans released TE Delanie Walker.
Tennessee will save $6.4 million against the cap by releasing their veteran tight end. Walker has played good football well into his 30s but father time has been catching up to him in recent years. Over the last two seasons, he has only played one and seven games, which allowed Jonnu Smith to flash potential as his replacement. Walker will likely either look to sign on a competing team or head into retirement.
  • FA Tight End #82
The Athletic’s John Glennon considers Delanie Walker a potential cap casualty this offseason.
Walker is entering his age 36-season and has rarely been healthy the last two years. With Jonnu Smith breaking out over the second half, it should be an easy decision for the Titans to move on from Walker. Tennessee would clear $6.4 million in cap space from Walker’s release.
  • FA Tight End #82
Titans placed TE Delanie Walker (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Walker had missed the last four games and wasn’t nearing a return. The Titans decided to just pull the plug on his 2019. Walker, 35, has been an absolute warrior in his career but is showing signs of breaking down. His body is betraying him. Jonnu Smith will handle tight end duties the rest of the way. Walker may have played his final snap for the Titans.
