Santana

Santana was signed to a minor league contract last month when the Red Sox were dealing with multiple injuries to their outfield regulars and didn’t end up making it back to Boston. The 31-year-old journeyman got into 38 games last year in the majors.

Santana was popped for performance-enhancing drugs just before the beginning of the 2022 regular season, but his 80-game PED suspension has now been served. The versatile 31-year-old enjoyed a breakout with the Rangers back in 2019 before compiling a rough .170/.247/.322 batting line in 190 plate appearances between Texas and Boston in 2020-2021. He’ll probably be stationed at Triple-A Worcester.

Santana tested positive for the performance-enhancer Boldenone. The veteran utility player is currently a free agent.

Rodriguez was one of three notable players -- Jose Rondon and Danny Santana being the others -- to test positive for Boldenone. All three players are currently free agents and would have to serve their suspension with whichever team winds up signing them (assuming they do, in fact, get signed).

Santana missed most of the final month of the 2021 regular season, but he’s healthy now and will give the Sox a versatile bench option for their best-of-five ALDS matchup against the Rays. Jose Iglesias was outrighted off the 40-man roster on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old was just recently activated from the COVID injured list on September 7. Jack Lopez has been recalled in a corresponding move.

Danny Santana will play left field and bat seventh against Tampa Bay left-hander Shane McClanahan.

Santana was only on the COVID IL for a couple of days, so his absence was probably the result of contact tracing and not a positive test. He’s slashed .168/.246/.318 with four homers and three steals in 35 games for Boston.

Hernandez has been out for the last week and a half after testing positive for the virus, but he’s good to go now. Danny Santana -- who is also on the IL but didn’t test positive -- is also expected back Tuesday.

The 30-year-old was just recently activated from the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain. Santana is the latest of several Red Sox to hit the COVID injured list recently. Francy Cordero has been recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
