Updating an earlier item, QB Collin Klein is only participating in the Texans’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
It was reported the 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist had signed a contract, but that’s not the case. Klein will have to change positions to have any real shot at carving out an NFL career.
  • FA Quarterback
The Texans opted against signing undrafted free agent tryout QB Collin Klein following rookie camp.
The minicamp concluded Sunday. “No, I did not sign,” Klein told FOX 26 in Houston. “I think they’re working through some things. I feel very good that I put my best foot forward and just so grateful they gave me the opportunity.” Klein could help his NFL chances by showing a willingness to play another position.
  • FA Quarterback
The agent for Kansas State QB Collin Klein shot down a report that Klein will perform tight end drills at the Combine.
Teams wanted to look at 6-foot-5, 226-pound Klein as a pass catcher, but he didn’t prepare for receiver workouts and will participate as a quarterback. “I want to pursue every door that I possibly can at quarterback,” Klein said. “Until everyone one of those are closed, I’m not considering anything else.”
  • FA Quarterback
Kansas State QB Collin Klein will participate in tight end drills at the NFL Scouting Combine.
At least one team wanted to see Klein work with the tight ends. Klein is smart to oblige because no teams believe he’s an NFL quarterback and he’s sporting a barely-draftable grade. Off topic, Klein’s weigh-in was 6-foot-5, 226.
  • FA Quarterback
Kansas State QB Collin Klein plans to participate in all drills at the Combine.
Klein — whose Tim Tebow-esque throwing motion is a big reason he’s considered no more than a late-round prospect — is unlikely to impress in passing drills, but has nothing to lose by throwing at the Combine. The Heisman Trophy finalist has been working with former NFL QB Jake Plummer in an effort to improve his mechanics. Klein will be a major project if he insists on staying under center.
  • FA Quarterback
Kansas State QB/TE Collin Klein ran forty times of 4.78 and 4.81 at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Klein stands 6-foot-5, 226. He’d be smart to agree to some pass-catching drills at K-State’s Pro Day because Klein will not be drafted to play quarterback. “If he’s going to be drafted,” NFL Network’s Mike Mayock said of the Heisman finalist, “it’s going to be in the sixth or seventh round.”
  • FA Quarterback
Collin Klein will play quarterback with the Texans.
Klein, a 2012 Heisman Trophy candidate, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Texans on Saturday night. Teams wanted to see him work out as a tight end at the Combine, but he declined. There have also been murmurs that Klein could try and play linebacker or safety. The odds are against Klein.
  • FA Quarterback
Kansas State’s Collin Klein reiterated that he has every intention of trying to play quarterback in the NFL.
NFL teams asked Klein to work out as a tight end at the Combine, but he passed. “In my heart, I know I can do it (play quarterback in the NFL),” Klein said. “That’s the position I love to play. Until that door closes, I’m going to walk through it.” Klein is hurting his stock by refusing to try another position.
  • FA Quarterback
Texans signed Kansas State QB Collin Klein.
Klein (6-foot-4 7/8, 226) was a run-first quarterback at K-State, throwing just 30 career touchdown passes but rushing for 56. With an awkward, unnatural throwing motion and little velocity, Klein was asked to work out as a tight end at the Combine, but declined. He showed enough physicality in college that he could perhaps be tried at linebacker or safety, although Klein has 4.7-4.8 speed. The odds are against Klein having a long NFL career.
  • FA Quarterback
Former Kansas State QB Collin Klein is heading back to K-State to serve as a graduate assistant.
He’ll join coach Bill Snyder’s staff. After refusing to play positions other than quarterback in talks with NFL teams, Klein went undrafted in 2013, and was not signed following a tryout with the Texans. He signed a two-year deal with the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes this April, but has obviously changed his mind.
