For a moment there was widespread panic in Columbus, Ohio.
During a seminar on Wednesday, “the” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith apparently told some students he expected “the” Ohio State-Michigan game to be moved to early November. It was also reported that Smith informed the students that “the” OSU and UM would play in opposite divisions in the new Big Ten.
Apparently, those comments were taken out of context. Sorry, false alarm.
Smith covered his behind by clarifying that he was simply expressing possible scenarios and that the Big Ten has not reached an agreement about divisional alignment or changing “the” OSU-UM date.
Smith did mention that he was concerned about the two schools being unable to play every year. However, that notion has been largely dismissed as crap because it’s “the” Ohio State University and Michigan.
“All I know is I went into this thing (insisting) we’ve got to play every single year,” Smith said. “I was going into the meetings open-minded to ensure we do what’s best for conference from that point on,” said Smith.
