Last month Texas Tech had a promotion where a student was brought out of the stands during a game and asked to try a 30-yard field goal. He drilled it, and his prize was that getting his rent paid for him that month. At least, that’s what he thought his prize was. As it turned out, his prize was a spot on the football team.Texas Tech was so impressed with the student, Matt Williams, that he was asked to walk on. And the Red Raiders have been so bad on field goals this season that they say he’ll travel with the team Saturday at Kansas and might be the guy to handle the kicking duties.”We didn’t anticipate having to go that direction,” Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said. “I’ve already seen him kick a 30-yard field goal in front of 55,000 people."So far this season, Texas Tech’s two kickers -- freshman Donnie Carona and senior Cory Fowler -- have combined to miss six extra points and four of eight field-goal attempts. On Saturday, Carona will handle the kickoff duties, but Williams (who kicked briefly at Division II Tarleton State before transferring to Texas Tech), might be the man on field goals. As for extra points? This is Mike Leach we’re talking about, so don’t be surprised if the Red Raiders just start going for two after every touchdown.
