Tuesday, Texas announced that its beloved mascot, Bevo XIV, had been diagnosed with bovine leukemia and had been retired effective immediately. That announcement came a few days after it was confirmed that the Longhorn would miss the annual rivalry game with Oklahoma with a life-threatening illness.
Three days after his retirement, Bevo passed away in his sleep Friday morning, the university announced.
“BEVO XIV was so much more than a traditional mascot—he was so big and strong, but he had such a sweet personality and a gentle soul,” said Ricky Brennes, executive director of the Silver Spurs and Bevo XIV’s regular traveling partner, in a statement. “He loved the attention that came with being BEVO but was very cool, calm and smart. Like a dog he would come when called by name, show up to the house looking for treats and even roll over on his side so Mrs. Baker could rub his belly. He did so much for his university and community. His last few days provided great memories, but we miss him already.”
This iteration of Bevo began his mascot career in 2004 at the age of two. His official records in games in which he appeared was 106-41.
The search for Bevo XV will begin immediately, the school said in its press release on Bevo XIV’s passing.
