SEC media days have begun, giving us some tangible evidence -- finally! -- that football is indeed right around the corner.
We’ll have continuing coverage of SEC media days as things pop up, but here are a few notes from commissioner Mike Slive in his opening remarks. Overall, it was uneventful:
- Remember talk of the SEC’s third-tier TV network, known as “Project X”? That’s been renamed, sort of, to “Project SEC.” Details are still being ironed out on that. “I know you want me to say more, but I won’t,” Slive said with a smirk.
- The so-called “Champions Bowl’ between the SEC and Big 12 will begin on Jan. 1, 2015. Just like “Project SEC”, there aren’t any real details to be divulged (where the game will be played, on which network it will be broadcast, etc).
- In regards to new members Missouri and Texas A&M, Slive said they “fit.”
- Without naming anyone specifically, Slive took an indirect shot at Joe Paterno and Penn State following the Freeh report. “No one person can be allowed to derail the soul of an institution,” Slive said.
- Other than that, and with the annual accolades of success on the field and in the classroom, about the only thing interesting about Slive’s opening remarks were his quotes from Winston Churchill, Ali and Shakespeare, among others.
