Report: USC contacts Chris Petersen

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, the University of Southern California has contacted Boise State’s Chris Petersen about the Trojans’ head-coaching vacancy.

The idea theoretically sounds great for USC, but Peterson recently signed a five-year extension and wouldn’t figure to break it to coach at a school that might face NCAA sanctions for several alleged violations under ex-coach Pete Carroll.

ESPN’s Graham Watson contacted a Boise State official about the report Tuesday.

“Coach Petersen is out of town today and unavailable,” the BSU official said via email. “Also, Coach Petersen, and the University, normally does not comment on these type of reports.”

The Trojans are running out of high-profile options after Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio committed Tuesday to stay in Jacksonville for 2010, and Petersen isn’t likely to bolt Boise for L.A. But at least they’re still aiming high.
