Report: Amway to become new AFCA trophy sponsor

CBSSports.com reported on Tuesday that the news corporate sponsor for the American Football Coaches Association trophy -- the fabled glass football -- will be Amway. The announcement is expected on Wednesday morning.

Amway will replace Dr. Pepper, which has sponsored the trophy the past nine years.

Just like during the BCS era, the trophy will be awarded to the team that finishes No. 1 in the final coaches’ poll. However, the $30,000 waterford crystal football will not be the official trophy of the new College Football Playoff.

Instead, the crystal football will become just another curiosity from a bygone college football era. What a shame. It was a good-looking trophy, wasn’t it?

The glass football -- a Waterford crystal sculpture worth $30,000 -- had become a symbol of the national championship in that BCS era. However, the AFCA was notified within the last year that the glass football will not be considered the official championship trophy of the new College Football Playoff.

Amway is described as a “global leader in health, beauty and outstanding business opportunity for independent business owners.”
