Gee, whatever could that be.
Four days after it was first reported that the Big 12 had voted to extend a membership invitation to TCU, a major announcement is expected to come from the school at some point Monday. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, citing an unnamed source, reports that the announcement is expected to take place at 6 or 7 p.m. ET today. It’s unclear if that announcement will be in the form of a press conference involving the president and athletic director or a press release or both.
As had previously been reported, TCU’s Board of Trustees are meeting today and a vote on accepting the Big 12 invitation and moving on from the Mountain West -- or, technically, from the Big East -- is expected to take place. Barring an unforeseen development, the trustees will vote in favor of a move to the Big 12.
The move would become effective in July 2012, the same time the Horned Frogs had agreed last November to become members of the Big East. It had previously been reported that TCU will likely be required to pay $5 million for backing out of their agreement with the Big East.
The addition of TCU would give the Big 12 10 members for the 2012 season, pending Missouri’s decision to stay or bolt for the SEC. The conference is currently in the midst of discussion on remaining at 10 members or getting back to the number in its name.
UPDATED 11:06 ET: In a press release, the school confirmed that there will be a major announcement concerning the future of TCU athletics at 7 p.m. ET Monday evening.
